Very interesting and I think, highly relevant video showing pistons using very cheap oil. Toyota states (warns) in their Tacoma maintenance guide, if 0W20 oil was not used last change then change oil and use 0W20 now at this interval. After watching this video, imagine, what OP's pistons look like after his event. Refer to 'tiny holes' in video below. Now I'm convinced, as many of you are, especially the experts who have weighed in on this thread, OPs pistons are likely toast. Sure, without an inspection there's really no proof, and again that's already been stated by the experts who have already stated such.

That 0-20 is crap they do that for the epa gas mileage. My truck is a 2021 with the 2.7 they obviously say the same use 0-20. It’s the same motor as in the 2nd gen but the second gen manual doesn’t suggest 0-20. It’s a super thin oil yes good for colder climate states and gas mileage. Hotter climate states that don’t get a harsh winter I wouldn’t use it. I live in NC mild winter and warmer summers I use 5-30

2nd gen 2.7s reccomend the same oil...

Before we got our 3rd gen V6 works trucks we had 2nd gen single cab 2.7s. Both trucks went 300k and were sold still running perfect. 10k mile oil change intervals with dealer 0w20.

When you build a sludge engine bad chit happens. Oil has little to do with it.

Lack of oil at first start up killed this brand new Ford Re-Man motor that's in this Transit Van. Probably ran for just a minute, minute and a half without oil.

    20220531_144825.jpg

The short story.. Indie shop bought the motor over the counter from my dealership, they install it for their customer. Started it up for the first time and let it run for whatever amount of time that it took them to realize that they failed to verify if there's any motor oil in the motor. Motor runs but noisy and has low oil pressure..

Now I'm about to be married to it swapping a new re-man that the Indie shop will be responsible for..

I filled out a “how did we do?” to Toyota once about a dealer who was trying to low-ball (in the end I got what I wanted knowing they were still making bank, but damn if it wasn’t a struggle to stop them from taking more) About two weeks later, I got a call from the dealer trying to explain profusely what had happened, and that I didn’t get low-balled in the end. They were very apologetic, which I found odd.

    Chose your words wisely.
