I've driven last 5-6 new cars off the lot as I would drive them any day, including redline once warm. 0 issues, 0 blow by or oil consumption. If these things were really that sensitive to break in, you would have tons of engine issues in them from general public that never cracks the user manual.

The guys at my Toyota dealership can’t even remember to put the valve caps back on my wheels after a service appointment, I highly doubt they’ll be able to tell (or care) that you’re running a tune lol

I got the KDMax tune after about 4K miles and I wish I had done it the day I bought the truck. It’s like driving an entirely different vehicle.

What is the worry about getting an ECU tune during the first 5-10k miles? It’s not like you are throwing in a supercharger, increasing the horsepower by 100% and taking it to drag strip. From all evidence posted online, the tunes give a very minor increase in engine output, change the shift points, smooth out the dip at 4k rpm, etc. I little to be worried about beyond any other major mod you might do to your truck.

That said, I highly recommend you drive your truck stock for a while and then decide if you want to modify it. Take everything the tune fan boys say with a grain of salt and make up your own mind. It may not seem like it, but they are a vocal minority.

There is no break period. The motors are broken in at the factory. I run a JLT catch can and it helps. Tune away as the difference in the tune is not going to hurt anything. A little common sense is all you need.

Drive it without the tune for awhile. Figure out if you need or want the tune. At the very least then you will appreciate the tune when you get it.

I agree, but it's not the guys at the dealership that concern me. It's when Toyota starts digging into the ECU because of a major failure. And yes I realize the odds of this happening are negligible, but they aren't zero.

Stock truck leave it stock. Imo the stock tune has best mpgs. Once you go bigger tires or lift then I would tune it. But in the mean time learn how the truck drives. Be ready for those upshifts in the city for max mpgs and the gear hunt on the highway. My truck is stock and I went back to stock tune for the mpgs if that matters

Cheapest tune to check out first is your right foot. Mash it to the floor board, it'll go.

    This!

It's not like the dealer has the "Tune Police" running around checking every truck that comes in for some sort of maintenance item for an after market tune. I worked in IT for years, and thus still find it very hard to believe that messing around with the ECU when doing a tune does not leave some sort of digital footprint. If someone had a major engine failure during the warranty period that had nothing to do with the tune, Toyota would absolutely blame it on the tune if they could prove that the ECU was fucked with (again, I betting that there is some sort of digital marker that would tell them that someone besides Toyota had been messing with the guts of the control unit.)

Tune away on your new truck, but don't fool yourself that this is a risk free endeavor.

Just got back from a power washing morning. Can't believe the a-holes they allow on the roads today. I must of blew by least a 1/2 dozen drivers that could of been pulled over for dui. Truck is a rocket with the stock tune. I'm still amazed how quick this is from 30 mph to 80, and still pulling hard. It puts my old 4.7 tundra to shame.

Why do you need a tune if you haven’t driven the truck yet? Most 3rd gen Tacoma’s, especially later model ones drive just fine on a stock tune, including mine.

The only reason I got the SFOB tune is because MT guys were raving about it. Would I go back to stock, no way. It’s a lot more fun to drive and it really helps once I added all the extra weight.

Drive your truck first and decide, I’m pretty sure you will pleasantly surprised.

Yeah I really don’t understand the lack of power complaint. Truck rips when you step on it.

I like it to rip when I think about stepping on it - KDMAX Pro+XT  Seriously though, tuning supports all the various options of builds like regearing and oversized tires. It also provides much better access to the throttle curves and greatly improves shifting logic. Its not a race truck or a lack of power, it's the significant improvements to the ability to use what it has.

It looks like 75% of the owners I have worked with are well under 60k miles. Heck I've been tuned for more than that. With a proper tune with ongoing updates are you in great hands!

I waited until 1500 miles for no other reason than my tuner was 300 miles away. Do it ASAP. Totally wakes the truck up.

True, if you have the equipment. If I did it I would be having someone do it for me, which means when I go in for service I would have to hunt down a tuner and pay them to go to stock, then put the tune back after it's done. My truck doesn't drive anywhere near badly enough on the stock tune to justify that, plus I'm an old fart and very risk adverse :)

I don't even need to floor it. I drive it the same way as my tundra. Truck just comes alive when you press the petal some. Screw a tune, it goes so good stock.
