It all started with a bad fuel pump

    Hey folks,
I’ve been stalking the forum for about a year fixing many issues with my 97 by going through older posts. I have finally found the issue that’s not such I straight forward fix and I need some input from someone with more knowledge than I have.
In January I hit a washboard road and got a check engine light but no noticeable change in performance. I am pretty rough on the truck so I figured some plug jarred loose. Then I hit a quarter tank and it started bucking and sputtering on turns and accelerating from a stop. Deduced that it was a bad fuel pump. I had to park it for a few weeks until I got a buddy to help me drop the tank and change it out. Got it done and it ran great for 300 or so miles.
Friday after about a 50 mile morning, I parked it. Went to go get some groceries that evening and it started fine and drove like normal about 1/2 mile to the end of the driveway but when I turned onto the road it died. I thought I just stalled it but it wouldn’t restart. Towed it back to the house to begin diagnosis.
Fuel pump is working. Changed fuel filter. Pulled plugs and it has spark. It has compression. Figured since I had gone that far I might as well change all the belts since they were already sitting on the shelf(including timing belt). All back together now. Still no start(which I anticipated) But got a p0340 code. Changed the sensor, and it still throws the code. It tries to start for a couple seconds but dies immediately.
So now that I’ve written a whole book about it, where do I go from here?

Check the wiring to the cam sensor plug.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Are you still getting the same code?

Did you use a Toyota Sensor or after market ?

Sometimes the pins are off enough to not make a complete circuit .

How long did the truck sit with the front of the engine apart?

I have had corrosion not seen by my eyes drive me crazy it tests good with a meter plugged in it does not work . I spent a good two days before I thought to spray both sides of the plugs with electrical cleaner. Hit it with air plugged it in it worked Truck started.

    Good Luck.

    Yes, still the same code.
I am sure it wasn't OEM but it was what Napa had on hand.
Truck only sat for maybe 10 hours with everything off of it.
I will definitely get some electrical cleaner and look at the wiring. Once I get it figured, I'll update. I am out of town until tomorrow night. Hopefully ill make some headway. Thanks for the pointers.

    I do not know.

I did the old timing belt delete mod. jkjk that was the halfway point while changing it out.

I have been working a lot out of town lately and have not had any time to look into fixing the truck. I am going to hopefully have some time this weekend to work on it. I did look at the wiring last sunday and everything appeared fine. ill put the multimeter on it as soon as Ican. If I cant figure it out with my limited time this weekend i will have to put it in a shop next week.

EDIT: I did have a chance to check the codes again and it is not a p0340 it is a p0335 code.

Been a bit but I figured I’d update this. I ended up taking it to a shop to get the fuel issue sorted. It turned out that the small rubber fuel line between the pump and the pickup burst. Blew my mind that a brand new hose would blow like that but I guess stranger things have happened. That got the truck running but I still had a strong shudder about 4K rpm. Pulled the part store sensor and replaced with oem and it has been running like a top since. One of these days I will have to do a build thread. Thanks to all of y’all that tried to help me out.
