Truck is getting some TLC, need opinions on mild aftermarket parts.

I have a 2010 4.0 trd offroad manual 193K miles. Best truck I ever owned. I live in interior Alaska and she lives a hard life but I do my best to take care of it. All stock, staying in a stockish configuration. Mild offroad by Alaska standards. I have an ATV for a reason.

Need shocks. What's your favorite shock? I am considering the Bilstein 4600s but would consider beefing it up. If you have ever driven in the artic or know what ice swells are that is what I deal with a lot. The roads actually improve A LOT when they become permanent ice. Imagine highway speeds and the road wrinkles like a carped or rug due to intermittent permafrost. Basically the ground swells and shrinks, sometimes over 100 yards, or over 3 yards. These swells move around week to week and sometimes you can catch some air if you aren't paying attention. Just part of life up here. We also have a ton of unpaved highway. All that being said I don't want some over the top BAJA kit, I don't jump on purpose.

Might throw in a leveling spacer while I am in there.

Need a clutch. Don't tow often, the stock unit did great for me. Most I tow is two wheelers or two snow machines. I do often pull people out of snow and mud and sometimes tow or haul on some trails just to the trail head. Or pull downed trees and that kind of thing. Was considering the Aisin kit. Don't think i need anything cooler but open to ideas.

Throwing stock bearings and axles in the front. Unless somebody has some advice.

Routine brakes all the way around and all fluids.

I'd go with Bilstein 5100's

A OEM clutch kit but get the URD clutch quill sleeve and do that while you're in there.

OEM axles are the best, bearing OEM are good they should be either Koyo or NSK.

 

Thanks, I will looks into that URD thing. I am noticing that the 5100's offer 0-2.5 inch lift in the front so that should work out with a simple spring spacer? Or do I not need one?

 

You don't need one though you may consider getting a quarter inch top hat spacer for the "Taco lean", the Bilstein 5100s have an adjustable lower spring purch on them with a c-clip and you can set the ride lift height with this factory springs or for a better ride you can look into getting OME (Old Man Emu) ((not the same as OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturer)) springs and leave the shock perch at the bottom at the lowest settings and still gain lift.

 

Is this throw-out bearing really worth 250 bucks. Am I looking at the right thing your recommended?

Yup that's it and 100% just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter very carefully, hopefully yours isn't as scarred as mine was. Though mine was pretty bad it isn't the worst one I've seen on here by half; the real bad ones ultimately snap off and because of how that quill is cast into the transmission end plate in order to remove that plate you have to completely tear down the transmission and basically you'll end up getting a new transmission if you don't.

Why the 05 taco bearings?

 

Agree with the advice to go with an adjustable shock for your coilovers, 5100’s or 6112’s.

5100’s are more budget friendly because they’re smaller than the 6112’s and reuse your stock coil.

Either way you can choose a height setting that will get you closer to level and give you increased performance, no spacer required.

 

Im just gonna throw this out there, the 5100 shocks people keep recommending, are firmer than the 4600, they are valved internally different. So for washboard roads, the 5100s would be your best choice. You dont have to make them higher than the stock height, just use them as replacements. Once you start preloading them, they get more "jumpy"

I also have that urd sleeve and after 20k miles I am experiencing the squeak at the throwout bearing still. I am pretty hard on the clutch though.

 

How did you feel about the install on that sleeve? I might buy your kit and flywheel. I wonder how much the shipping will be up here though. Sometimes its fine and sometimes the shipping will be 200or even 300 with the post office. I try to milk Amazon and free shipping as much as I can. One company just tried to charge me 120 buck to ship the shocks.

 

another vote for the URD sleeve TOB. I installed one on an FJ (same transmission) and it's a decent bandaid for the wear on the stock snout.

 

once you have the sleeve can you change bearings? Or you gotta buy from urd again?

 

You have to buy URDs bearing. it's a modified stock bearing.

Once you see how badly scored your stock snout is it will make sense.

Worst case you remove the sleeve and re-install a stock bearing. It is mildly glued in, but some heat should allow easy removal.

Sorry man, I already found a free shipping place. Shipping it freight would take some two weeks, and anything faster blows the deal. Its just how it is here. I gotta milk these commercial high volume shipping accounts. Its just how it is. Good luck with your sale though. Sometimes retailers cancel my orders because they don't want to deal with Alaska shipping. If that happens I'll buy yours. I will know when the tracking info hits and let you know.
