Moneys been very tight last few years and I had bought 4 tires off Craigslist. Definitely not top of the line by no means starfire 510 2 of which have a lot of life left in them and 2 that won't pass inspection.it looks like they may be discontinued so my question is can I buy 2 tires of different brand with similar tread pattern used on the same axle without damaging transmission or transfer case. I wouldn’t recommend it. Your tires are going to wear differently, shortening their life and causing more issues down the road. If you can run two of the same tires on each axle, having two sets of two tires. Lord knows I’ve been where you are so I can definitely relate! I had a Chevy S-10 for over ten years and had to do the same thing on several occasions. I never had issues buying tire pairs.

I’m not sure if you’ve looked into it, but sometimes the small, family owned tire shops will sell used tires with low miles on them at steep discounts. The bigger chains won’t do this for liability reasons. Of course you’ll forfeit any warranty, but tires from Craigslist don’t have that anyway.

    All the best!

Not if you plan on engaging the 4x4.

Tires should be of the same relative treadwear.

In practice, anyhow. In reality, fronts and rears will always have some scrub (rotational difference). They'll just have more scrub if they're not similar.

You safely install any type tire on same axle as long as they are the same outside diameter. There is some leeway there also; otherwise, you would blow the axle with differing tire pressures.

None on the 2018, 35 years of hard wear on the 1987
As long as the size is the same you shouldn't have a problem. I used to have to do this all the time when I was young and poor(er).

Laying rubber and similar heavy foot practices are what does the damage.

Yes. If they’re the same size you’ll be fine. Ie: if to have 265/65/17s on the front and need two rears just buy the same size.

Thanks guy's still makes me anxious but the parent company Cooper tires said their solarus tire is the replacement for the 510 so I'll give it a shot. Trucks got to last me but thank God she still rides great at 174,000 . good day to all
