Looking for the best all terrain tires. Its for my 2004 Double Cab Prerunner which are rocking the stock 265/70R16 setup. I have some really old BFGoodrich All Terains on the car right now, am looking for an upgrade pretty soon.

Any tips as to understanding tire sizing etc? Ive seen people talking about 285/70R16 for their trucks, I just dont understand how much of a difference my OEM is vs aftermarket sizes. I do plan for off roading occasonally, while mainly driving long distances on the freeway.

    It's a secret
Since more of your driving is going to be spent on paved roads, an all-season or all-weather set of tires would be wiser because they will provide better stopping distance and traction on roads. They also tend to have better tread wear longevity than all-terrain tires.

There is a lot of info from tons of sources on tire size explanation. It is very basic. Lets compare the two sizes you mention. 265/70/16 vs 285/70/16. The 16 is rim diameter in inches and the same between the two. The 265 and the 285 are the overall width of the tire in milli meters. The 70 is a percentage of section/overall width or otherwise known as aspect ratio describing height of sidewall (based on the radius not diameter). 70% of 265=185.5 and 70% of 285=199.5 so a 285 has a sidewall that is 14mm taller than the 265. Than we take that 14mm x 2 (top and bottom of tire)=28mm. So that 285 will be 28mm (25.4mm = 1 inch) taller than the 265 and it will be 20mm wider. There of course will be variables in actual numbers from brand to brand and tread depth will also impact actual numbers. For example if we look at 285/75/17 BFG a KO2 with a 15/32" tread depth vs the KM3 with a 18/32" the KM3 will measure taller. Load rating and tire pressure will also impact overall height when installed and vehicle resting on tires. Hope that was clear.
