Hi all...Once again I am asking for your knowledge and assistance in order to avoid the dreaded dealer. Great people and great forum. I just reviewed the forum and could not find an answer to the following: I have a 2017 Tacoma Access Cab TRD 4x4 Off Road. I have recently noticed that I cannot shift into S1 above 20MPH but can below 20MPH. If I try to shift into S1 before 20MPH I hear a "Beep Beep sound" which is perhaps a warning sound associated with the transmission not allowing the shift into S1 above 20MPH.

    1. Can someone verify for me whether this is what you are experiencing if you have a 2017 Tacoma.
    2. Is the Beep Beep sound I hear before I can shift into S1 a notice type of thing since I can sheft into S1 below 20MPH.
    3. Is the situation I described above normal for my transmission and that I do not have a transmission problem?

Thanks for your knowledge and facts in advance.

Happy Friday! It sounds like the truck is simply preventing you from over revving the engine.

Sounds normal to me. Sounds like your truck is preventing you from playing a dumb game, thus preventing you from winning a dumb prize.

    Happy Friday y'all.

You are being locked out to prevent damage to your transmission and/or engine from an unreasonable downshift outside of proper operating parameters.

'21 Sport DCSB Auto.... can confirm what you are experiencing is the audible warning from trying to downshift in an over-revving situation. I did the same thing once when I pulled back when I wanted to upshift into the next gear (meaning to shift to S3 from S2). I should have pushed forward to advance to the next gear but the truck saved me. I experienced the exact thing you did: truck did not shift (thankfully the ECU & ECT has safeties built in), I heard an audible beep, and then I realized what I did. I cannot recall if there was a warning displayed in the center dash notification center.

This can't be a serious question! Your fucking truck is smarter than you are brother. It's keeping you from over revving the engine.

I'm surprised it doesn't let you go into S1 and just wait until the speed is low enough to actually shift into first.

Why are you trying to shift it into S1 at >20mph? S1’s only real purpose is to engine brake while going down a seriously steep slope at under 5mph or so.

Your 2017 sounds way more polite than mine.

In the 2018 models, trying to over-rev in S mode makes this image display on the dashboard:

This... like every other automatic transmission selector of a consumer car known to man.

2nd gen you can slam the bitch all the way down to 1st and the trans computer will only allow the trans to downshift if it deems possible, but will downshift to 1st as soon as it can.

Sorry, but back in the day when you did a dumbass move like this you would lock up the rear tires.... If the rear end held together.
Hell, you could even put in in reverse while going forward and watch transmission parts litter the road in your rear view mirror.
    Doing stupid stuff was expensive.

As others have mentioned, it’s just a built in safety feature to protect the trans. My tundra does the same thing, sometimes I’m going a hair too fast to shift into S1 on a downward slope for engine braking.

Even an antiquated C4 3 speed auto wont shift to 1st at an unsafe speed if you put the selector into 1st....

Guys...no need to be smart ass and rude. I was coming down La Manga pass between Chama NM and Antonito CO. The descent down is quite steep and very winding. I just wanted to slow down on some curves when I was going about 25mph. Thats when I noticed that beep and an inability to shft down into S1 to go a little slower and save brakes. Apparently you smart mouth individuals all have Tacomas that you drive back and forth to the store and then back home to watch TV. Kinda like wanna be's..who are a dime a dozen.

No thanks for your assistance but to those folks who understand such a situation and were kind enough to provide their kind remarks...thank you. Onward and upward.

The rear end is fine, even safer with some brake input. Been doing it for 10 years in all my manual rigs to pitch them into corners.
