Painting Tacoma rear bumper

    Hi, so I want paint my tacoma’s rear bumper it’s currently chrome. I want to use a paint gun and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good affordable paint gun. Also need to know where I can get paint to match my truck.

    Painting over chrome will be a very disappointing task

    2" Leveling Kit, TRD skid plate, 16" Jeep wheels, Katzkin leather seats w/heaters, jump seat delete
    Painting chrome is iffy. Trick is to lightly scuff the plating, but not so as to go thru it to the nickel. I did this 20 years ago to the grill of my Suburban. Other than rock chips, it has held up very well.

    My advice, buy a black bumper and paint it. Sell the chrome one.

    Concur with what's been said. Go a different route.

    I consulted many automotive painters about painting the chrome bumper. Half wouldn't do it, the other half set low expectations.

    I ended up buying a black replacememt bumper (lowest trim Tacoma) and sold the chrome one. Could have painted that one to match, but I liked it better black.

    Once I realized paint would cover the chrome, but make the surface bubbles stick out more, I bought a new aftermarket bumper.
    I want to say i got it ordered & shipped for like $150. I didn’t opt to waste any time on paint as it was already primed black.

    No need to go overboard with a spray gun for something that may likely not hold up. Scuff the surface until it's gloss free, rattlecan 2 layers of adhesion promoter, then either plastidip or preferably bedliner. Personally, easier to touch up with bedliner or krylon satin black rattlecan versus PD. My past experience with PD is that with any scrapes or damage to PD, the area edges curls up and and can't be sanded to repair easily.

    With chrome you’re gonna want to use a primer or sand the bumper to make it a bit more rough. Don’t think paint will stick to chrome.
