Swapped coils, no change. Looking for a new plug now. Silver lining is that it’s cylinder #5. The way my luck goes it should have been cylinder #6.

I wouldn't thank my lucky stars just yet.
If that doesn't fix it, you're probably looking at a head gasket.

The gap on the new plugs looks off compared to the old one. Have you tried closing the gap a little on the new plug so there is a closer spark. I bet its the plug.

I noticed this as well. I confirmed the gap on the new plug. I’ll check the spec again. I checked the gap on all six before installing.

FWIW, the drive in this morning produced zero misfires on the old plug. Waiting for my 6/10 delivery of a new plug. I guess I could have checked the dealer inventory.

From what you're describing you have a new plug that is bad. Buy another one and swap it,if the coil worked for the old plug and not the new chances it's the coil are almost nil. Sometimes plugs are just bad. Good luck. Make sure your coil connections are all good, did that once.

I could be wrong here, but I believe the iridium plugs are coated with iridium and the electrodes are not made of iridium. So, gapping would tend to affect the coating. I would not gap multi electrode plugs.

If it wasn’t having any misfires ever, right up until the moment he changed the plugs, it ain’t a head gasket. If it runs fine with the old plug back in hole 5, it’s the plug. /

Yep, lots of good advice. So far, the consensus is: new plug bad, old plug good.

I’ll swap out with the new one this weekend assuming it arrives in time. If I get crazy impatient, I’ll stop by the dealership on the way home one day.

I hadn’t thought about coatings and how gapping might affect them. I guess it depends on your technique. I’m wondering how strong the coating is now. I’m assuming it was coated with electrolysis in a vacuum. Anodizing might not be strong enough to withstand the constant arcing.

Ya most likely the box was dropped in the parts store or during shipping and the insulator has a microfracture. Its happened to me before.

Autozone home delivery because a) free delivery and b) not available for in store pickup. Go figure.

Well, my replacement plug arrived in the mail a few days early. Pulled the old-old plug out and put in the new-new plug. No misfires at idle for 3 minute. I’m not going through the trouble of putting the old-new plug back in to test the conclusion that I got a bad plug in my original six.

    Thanks everyone for the contributions.
