So pretty much what the topic title is happening. I had my local accessory dealer install my new RetraxPro XR tonneau cover a week or so ago. The cover is awesome btw.

After picking up my truck, driving it home. All was fine. Next time I started the engine, got a dash warning fuel cap was loose. Checked it, that warning went away and new one came up something was wrong with fuel system and to contact Toyota. Called them and they said drive it for a bit a light should go in a bit if it had been an issue with th cap. Read here and saw the same advice.

Anyways, light is still on. Can't get the truck into the dealer until next Tuesday afternoon. Just filled it up again and man! The cab just wreaks of gas. Almost unbearable.

So, to cover my bases prior to going to Toyota next Tuesday, thought I'd call Retrax and unfortunately they couldn't help as she didn't know the others exact location they may have drilled or attached to my bed.

I can't help but think the installer of the cover drilled, by accident, into a line or the tank itself? Possibly during the drain hole part of the install? No idea but no issues prior to having the cover installed.

Since I didn't do the install myself, I really don't know the process. The accessories dealer install price was extremely reasonable with the other small mods I was adding.

Anyone who has installed the XR, could you shed some light perhaps on if the installer 'could' have done something wrong?

Well check where they have the drain line(s) running?

    A bunch..and no build thread!
I can almost guarantee they drilled into the fill neck tube. Get under the truck with a light and check your tank and the filler neck.

Took it back to the installer of the cover and we hoisted it. Not 100% sure but ya, looks like the fuel line was punctured, thus the smell of gas being so strong right after filling up. Toyota will have to drop the tank and replace the tube I would guess.

I’m glad they found it, I installed mine without issues…instructions were also very clear on telling u where not to drill due to gas tank and fill tube

First glad you found the problem. I guess the shop pays the repair. Good luck

Oh they will. No problem there. They are extremely apologetic.

To OP, this really sucks. Sorry to hear.
The supplied instruction is very good and there is a ton of YouTube videos on Retrax install.
Really no need to pay some sloppy idiot to do this install.
It took me about an hour to install.

Don't judge me for not doing it myself. But for the price they were charging to install it along with four other mod installs it was worth it. I get they made a mistake but I'm not going to make a huge fuss. They admitted it, will pay to fix, and have been very understanding of my frustration.

This isn't a small company either. National brand. Their tech made a mistake and I'm ok. I'm also one that only honks my horn when someone really, really pisses me off so probably my own character flaw

Sounds like the shop is reputable enough to own up to their mistake and pay for. You got lucky. Keep giving them business to show your appreciation for their honesty. That is a rare find these days

People make mistakes, show me someone who doesn't make a mistake and I'll show you someone who doesn't do anything

Good on you for not making a huge stink (pun intended) about it and good on them for making it right

I was thrown by the subject at first because I don't remember having to drill for the retrax, but then I did remember about the water discharge hose!

Thought I would post an update. I figure some who may be researching the RetraxPro XR might find this story a cautionary tale.

Finally was able to get into Toyota. Fuel tube was punctured as suspected. I had them pre-order the part so I wouldn't have to go back. The tonneau cover installer called the dealership and paid by credit card. It was overall an inconvenience but I love the cover and the tonneau cover dealer didn't blink an eye when they realized their mistake.

I'm happy to have cruise control back!!

    Hey all,

I'm having a similar issue after having Toyota Service install a new Undercover Ultra Flex cover on my new 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro.

There are two water drain hoses associated with the cover install requiring two dime-sized holes being drilled into the truck bed...both by the bulkhead: one of the left side (near the fuel input spout), and one on the opposite side. After my first fill up hours after I had the cover installed, I had a major smell of fuel inside the cab, and on the outside of the truck near the driver's side rear tire. But I don't have an engine light on.

My first thought, was that the line running from the fuel input spout to the tank got punctured. So, I started searching for this problem online. Sure enough, I came across this thread.

There goes my 200-mile drive weekend Xmas trip to the in-laws. LOL

    Thanks for sharing this.

Just looking at the picture that was posted earlier. Does fuel actually pass through that hose, or is that just a vent hose that's part of the fill neck tube assembly?
