Great to know there is a small emergency cash of fuel left past the estimated distance

anytime, you just needed someone else to almost run out of gas and wonder how close they actually were.

Don't make that a habit. It ruins your fuel pump because it's lubricated by fuel. Glad it's running again after $100 of gas (I'm assuming).

The other half gallon is probably in the lines.

That's an old wives tale. Fuel pumps pick up fuel in a bottom inlet and pump it out a top outlet, for example:

    My wife never said that.

The most common cause of fuel pump failure is frequently running the tank low on fuel, which causes the motor to overheat.

wow, it probably has another 3 gallons left in it when the range says "0". good to know that i actually get way more miles to the tank then what the computer says for range.

it's not that the fuel pump isn't lubricated, it's that the fuel itself is used to cool the fuel pump. so when it runs low, it can heat up and accelerate wear. at least that's what i've heard.

Hahaha! Maybe not your wife, but plenty of others.

There's no way to overheat the motor with fuel constantly flowing through it. Heck, marine / aviation fuel pumps have an allowed priming time and height.

I freak out my wife and kid by letting it go past empty and telling them they will be pushing.

Exactly. We have a 21.1gal usable volume.

Nah. The pump itself is a disk with slots in it that gets forced through the upper outlet. The fuel is always lubricating it.

I was assuming that everyone knows it sits in the fuel tank and "pushes" fuel to the injectors. Whether it's lubrication or cooling or probably both, my point is that it's not good on the pump to run it dry.
