Thinking of changing my transmission oil in my 2001 MT 4x4 and I wanted to do it myself this time. Last done in 2018 at toyota.

Parts guy says, we dont carry a part number for that. I said huh??

Oh yea just go down to the parts store like we do and get some conventional 75w90 Valvoline gear oil. Thats probably what we used in your truck.

My receipt that day says 75w90 gear oil. So hes right there is no part number. Lol

Thoughts? I guess its been fine this whole time.

MTs and differentials are so simple you don't need anything special at all. Ford doesn't even change the gear oil in their diffs. It's basically a lifetime oil. I used 75-90 carquest brand.

Get some redline mT90 for the trans and call it a day. For diff and tcase those valvoline or amsoil pouches are super handy.

Toyota is in the automobile manufacturing and selling business, not the lubricants development business.

Even the Toyota branded fluids come from another manufacturer.

Hell at the dealer I worked at all the Toyota True Start and True2 batteries came off an Interstate Batteries truck much like the one below.

Yeah you're overthinking it. Toyota trucks, especially ones designed in the last century like yours, are maintainable by cave men (aka Taliban). Even generic 75W90 exceeds the requirement set in the owner's manual.

A few years ago I asked my local dealer if they carried gear oil, and the reply was their oil came in multi-gallon pails meant for shop use.

Got it! Yeah I start obsessing sometimes. Like right now. Looking at my owners manual. Front and rear diff take a hypoid 75w90 gear oil. But the manual trans and transfer case does not say hypoid just 75w90. Can MT90 or the Valvoline 75w90 go in all four gearboxes? Thanks for setting me on the right path here!

FSM calls for 80w-90 in rear axle and 75w-90 for everything else. GL-4 for transmission (manual) and GL-5 for the axles. 80w-90 is harder to find, especially in Synthetic but lots of people use 75w90 in rear axle w/o a problem for Gen 1 tacoma.

From my owners manual, but it looks like this is the same as what you said above. Its only below freezing here for maybe 30 nights a year and almost never stays below freezing throughout the day.

Oil type: Hypoid Gear Oil API GL−5 Recommended oil viscosity: Front SAE 75W−90 Rear Above −18C (0F) SAE 90 Below −18C (0F) SAE 80W or 80W−90
