I wasn't sure where to post this, but since it's related to my 2020 Tacoma I'm posting it here.

My local Napa parts store is having what I consider to be a really good sale on Pennzoil full synthetic oil and I'd like to stock up on it and pick up like 6 oil changes worth. At most, I currently would need to do 2 oil changes a year so if I get 6 sets of it, some of it will be sitting around for 3+ yrs. Will there be any issues with doing this? Will any of the additives break down over time or am I just overthinking this?

Generally oil starts to degrade in the bottle after 2 years. STARTS to degrade, it still does it’s job.

To me it’s worth buying as needed for the oil changes, maybe have enough on hand for your next one.

Will 3 or 4 year old oil still be ok? Probably just fine. For me it’s just not worth it to skimp on the most important maintenance piece.

Yeah, pretty stupid question! :) This ain't a gallon of milk here. I'd use it if it was 5 years old or more without blinking an eye. Give her a good shake and pour it in.

Idk about synthetic motor oils, but i've used regular motor oil years ago that sat over 5 years, and it was fine. I would think 3 years in an unopened jug should be ok. Omly issue i could see id some separation in the oil from sitting so long. A good shake job should take care of it.

There are people on BITOG that use oil that's many years old without issue. Shelf life is years.

Some people say setting really old oil out in the hot sun for a couple of hours, then shaking it up is beneficial. But who knows.

    Stock up with confidence

All the big motor oil manufacturers advertise a 5 year shelf life for synthetic so you’re good.

chances are in the next 3 years that oil will go on sale a few more times. Maybe grab an extra jug now, catch some more on the next sale.

Buy a year's worth. Then come back in six months and see better deals and then kick yourself for buying ahead.

Worse case is to do 5k intervals and use it quicker. Yapped with a guy in an old Subaru who claimed he changed his oil every 1,500 miles -
Now that's a bit anal if you ask me but he had 300k on it and the damn thing purred like a kitten. The body was shot to hell but that engine
    sounded great LOL.

The oil will be absolutely fine. About 6 years ago a napa sale and pennzoil rebate timed up correctly so 1 quart of pennzoil full synthetic oil was $2.00 each. I bought 52 quarts as that was the max number, other then one emergency quart in each vehicle I just recently used up the last of it. No issues with either vehicles engine.

To me, the issue with buying oil too far in advance of use, is that one can't then take advantage of technical improvements which crop up in new oil specs.

I did that in the spring filling my snowmobile full pull a 6 gallon jug, but with the high gas prices now, i ended up dipping into my reserves hoping it would go down.:frusty:
