What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Sounds like we need to make a weekend out of it. I'll buy the beer, provide food and lodging, and you can help me tub the shit of my truck.

 

I will help with the grinding/cutting/beating. You might want to get @Kwikvette to weld the sheet metal up though. I ain't the best welder around. See post above. lol

 

We did the gussets while we had the bearings out for replacement.

We pre-heated with a torch to a degree. I'm not sure it's totally necessary though, other than the fact that it's thick parent metal (the spindle) that you're welding on to.

Some people say to pre heat because they think the spindles are cast. They are not cast, they are forged.

Cool. Thin wire and shielding gas goes a long way in making it easier. When I did my rig I did it with .035 fucks core. There's very few things that have pissed me off more in life. lol

 

Yeah my thought of the pre heating the spindle is to actually get good penetration without blowing through the thinner material gussets.

Ya, flux burns hotter. Not so good for sheet metal.

What guage sheet did you use for yours? I have a 4'x4' sheet of 16 guage, I bought for a project I decided not to do, lol.

 

I used 18 but 16 should work just as well.

 

Got the wreck positioned on the concrete to start pulling it apart and taking what I want/need and a partout for the rest will be coming (hopefully soon) and got a photo of the 3 trucks at the farm together-ish

Anyone know where a person could find just a clear tail light plastic to replace the cloudy ones on my truck?

 

I'd go for the all pros. The TC ones will needs some heavy doctoring to fit right. The allpro ones already compensate for the differences front to back and side to side.

These are cool and all but really only work with fully adjustable Heim uppers. It's great you got yours to work with SPCs but it won't work out for everyone depending on how bent their coil buckets, frame, lca mounts, and steering rack mounts are.

I know I couldn't do that with my SPCs. I tried having them do most my camber with my SPCs and it didn't work and still needed to tweak the lowers.

So fair warning to all that try this. It's just as likely not to work out as it is to work out. If you want 100% it to work then heimed uppers are for you. But no alignment shop will work with those so then learn to do your own alignment.

Everyone has a different opinion, but I'd just mig them up without thinking too much about it.

I have solos and 35x12.50s without tubbing the firewall, but I did need to get into the battery and airbox locations pretty well. Probably a little easier than the firewall, but they certainly don't just fit.

I think trimming the fender would be easier than tubbing the firewall. Also pick up a slightly better approach angle with the tires further forward.

Sould be pretty easy to test by maxing the factory cams. If you can get camber with those maxed it should be the same.
