Best Scan Tool for 3rd Gen

i am looking at buying a OBD Scan Tool. I know many TW members like Scan Gauge for mounting on the dash. I was looking at the new Scan Gauge 3, but was wondering if that is the best bang for the buck. What Scan Tool do you like with these in mind?

1. Will only be plugged in for diagnostic (like checking transmission temp).
2. Most features and functionality for the price.
3. Works on Tacoma 3rd Gens and other late model Toyota products.

A little more than the cheap eBay/Amazon ones but I've never had an issue with it.

Can you read trans temp then? Because the issue I have with all of those is that even with compatibility to 3rd party apps, you end up having to pay extra money for in-app purchase to whatever app you end up using to access certain pids for functions like trans temp that aren’t considered “standard.”

 

There's a user defined PID function. There's a thread on here showing what you need to access it. But the guy has an 06.

i bought the enhanced pack for 2017 Toyota or honestly it wasn't gonna be worth much to me, so another $14, not a huge deal.

since getting a new phone i haven't set up OBD Fusion again so I'm also out, sorry.. can't jump in a 180 degree truck right now.

 

Yes you can read trans temp but you will likely need to purchase the add-on. They do this because they paid thousands to the automotive trade association which gives them access to the PID's along with some other goodies.

 

I have the Autel AP200 which comes with one free vehicle brand for life and you can purchase additional brands if needed (those are annual). Also has OBDII mode if you just want to see that data. Interface isn't the nicest but has access to all modules. I purchased it for Hyundai and it has worked great if you want to see live data, clear codes, record data... For the taco, I use tech stream.

I guess it all depends on what you're going to use it for. This one is pretty basic and cheap if all you need is to read codes, live data and limited special functions.

i would just get a basic $20 bluetooth obd adapter on Amazon. then you can see any of the phone apps to connect to it. If you want bidirectional functionality, i would go with the xtool d8 or something similar.
