2021 Tacoma 5 wheel rotation with TPMS

I had my dealer put 17" trd's and 33's on my truck as soon as it arrived, I never drove the stock wheels and tires. I told them I would be doing 5 wheel rotations and need an identical spare, which they provided. I do go far into the backcountry and need a reliable full size spare always ready and close to the same wear as my other tires. I also run my tires at lower pressure sometimes in the backcountry and like to monitor pressure on them when I hit the highway home to be sure they are not heating up.

After my first service (5000mi) my dash tire pressure was showing the new spare after the rotation instead of the former spare which is now mounted front passenger side. I followed the manual to reset and the dash never registered pressure again. I made an appointment and took it back to the dealer today and the end result was that they said I have 2 options - 1) pay them $100 to reload the tpms sensors every rotation because this is not covered in Toyota Care or 2) live with my sensors always being wrong.

I did not like this much.

This evening I am researching how Tacoma owners with 1 or 2 spares and multiple sets of tires handle this. Is the solution really to just accept that the dash is always wrong? What do Tacoma World members do to keep their tpms monitor working with more than 4 tires in rotation?

If I am not mistaken the stock computer can only hold 4 so you would have to get it reprogrammed each time.

 

Buy one more sensor and buy this programmer.

Program it yourself and rotate yourself. It's the only way to be sure and assure its done correctly.

I've had one customer in the last 10 years request a 5 tire rotation, its very uncommon now.

 

The tpms light is an annoying government mandated item that most people worry about, I have a set of snow tires mounted on wheels w/o tpms and put up with it, that's me though. I believe it only supports 4 wheels.

 

How many are buying directional tire's now also.

We sell "cloned" sensors that match the summer set so never needs to be programmed. Super convenient.

 

I work at a tire shop, but I ended up giving up on my readout being right. Reverted to old school method of checking my pressures once a week and glancing at all 4 tires to make sure they are not flat before driving.

 

Thank you, this is the most direct post I've found for the given issue of TPMS and a 5 wheel rotation. Much appreciated. Do you have any comparison of the $30 denso sensors compared to OEM? If I'm not mistaken the OEM ones are 2X the price.

 

Another quirk of Toyota perfection. Only TPMS equipped vehicle I've ever owned that didn't learn/detect sensor locations. More Toyota specific tools...yay.

 

I've tried a 5-way rotation over the years a couple of times. Decided it isn't worth the effort and having to deal with TPMS makes it worse. I don't mind TPMS, actually like it But I wouldn't want to deal with a 5 way rotation and what it would entail.

I suppose it wouldn't be so bad with my 07 which reads all 5 tires but I'd not try a 5 way rotation again. I'm all for having a capable spare in the same size as the 4 on the ground. The only vehicle where it made any sense was the Wrangler I had. The spare was visible and needed to match the 4 on the ground, and it was easy to get to when doing a rotation. But anymore I wouldn't even try it with a Jeep.

It doesn't prevent you from having to get new TPMS sensor transmitter ID's programmed into the vehicle any time a sensor is replaced. And non-Toyotas don't need that button, because the system learns the new locations itself after a rotation. The way Toyota designed it's TPMS system is lazy, and shows a lack of forward thinking.

 

If you get a clone aftermarket sensor with the OEM sensor ID number, there is no programming.

Just in case this helps anyone, I raised a little ruckus with the dealer at the second maintenance and they swore they could program it for me no charge every time I brought it in for a rotation if I bought the sensor installed from them. I walked over to parts and got a quote and it was a bit over $100 but by the time I got back they said that I would need to make an appointment to get it installed and that they found out that I would be charged a reprogramming fee although they would waive the labor so, $200+ for the sensor and still $100 every rotation.

So, I really dug into this. You were all correct in saying that the tpms reset only resets the existing sensors, and that there are only 4 slots for remembering 4 sensors. I decided to buy OEM or aftermarket and I also downloaded Carista and verified that it could read the sensors and that I could enter one every time the tires rotated as long as I had a record of what all 5 sensors were being used. So, Carista is an option. It also turns off some annoying sounds and makes the lane change turn signals last longer.

I did not try one of the programmers above, but I am sure a programmer would work because I went to my local Discount Tire next to ask them if they had any luck with any particular aftermarket brand sensor or if I should buy the Toyota OEM sensor, and if I did, how much would they charge to install it. The install would of been $10.

Instead, I went with their recommendation of buying their sensor, which I believe was Denso. They said they have not seen these fail on Toyota Trucks so I took a chance. Parts and installation were $65 including the programming and they have complimentary pressure checks where I get free programming from them just for asking so I canceled Carista and every time I get the tires rotated I now just stop by Discount Tire on the way home and have them check pressure and program with a programmer that looks a lot like the ones you all mentioned above.

If anyone at Toyota actually reads this - it would help guys like me (there are a lot of us in Idaho) and the people at the dealership if you put 6 slots in all vehicles that are obviously getting used for off-roading and overlanding.

So far my dashboard tpms has worked flawlessly, no issues at all. The only hassle is the extra stop on the way home every 5000 miles. I would prefer that the dealer was capable of a similar service, although for me it is still worth the extra stop as I like to see correct tire pressure and continue with 5 wheel rotations.

Obsessive, maybe, but what about a 6 tire rotation? Two good spares for venturing far out. If you ruin one, put a spare in permanent service and you still have a spare.

TS408) works for a 2020 Tacoma.

I use the stock wheels/tires and just buy new takeoffs to replace them once they're cooked. Either way, I am looking to do this. So, from what I gather, this tool will let me take, let's say, 4 new wheels w/ the stock TPMS in there - slap 'em on, plug it in, and now I have the pressures programmed into the truck.

Does this tell me to do it in an order, and gives me the location?

I have saved my arse three times now having the location readout on the dash catching shale in the woods, so it's a great tool to have - but wanting to know that this tool will do this for me before I pony up for it.

Also looking to do a 5 or 6 wheel rotation so would be doing the same thing on a relatively regular basis there too. I know I CAN use Techstream, but would prefer to use this if possible (and can bring it with me on the go easily).

If this tool can handle stock sensors and resetting the truck to new ones/changing wheels around, then I'm just about sold on it - a bit more $$$ than Techstream, but does the trick AND I can bring it with me since it's tiny, farm out services and use that to pay for itself, it works on other vehicles, a lot easier, etc etc.
