The block heater recall looks bigger than it is:
    https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2021/toyota-engine-block-heater-recall.shtml

Every Tacoma between 2005-2019 with a block heater is not affected as the total number of vehicles in that huge make/model/years list is only 51,000 vehicles so it's got to be a specific type of dud block heater. Check your VIN with Toyota to be sure. In my engine bay, it looks like they just cut the block heater cord and taped up the ends.

My 2020 had a dealer installed Block Heater. I was just in for LOF. I inquired about my Block Heater with the service writer. She said if you got a letter from Toyota I would be affected. If I brought the letter in they apparently would just cut the block heater so it would no longer work. I didn’t have a recall letter. So I’m assuming I’m okay. Also I’m assuming they don’t have a fix for those affected?

Sounds about right but check your VIN online using Toyota's lookup thingy. It will tell you which recalls your specific vehicle has. I am trying to find out if ANYONE affected has yet had a block heater permanent fix completed yet. That way I can tell if the dealership service rep I am talking to actually knows what is coming out of their mouth.

And I just called Toyota Canada and the dude said that they have not released the repair for the recall so no one has had the final repair done yet.

Damn this sucks. Reminds me of years ago with my second vehicle I ever had - fire engine red step side single cab F-150 (college student budget’s faux SVT lightning) - well I was at work and it burst into flames in the parking lot turns out there was a problem with the cruise control circuit and the recall hadn’t been sent out yet, for a while they were just unplugging everyones cruise control until they made a fix. I was almost in tears, can’t imagine my house going up in smoke along with the truck.

Sorry to see that happen Thumper71. Thank God no one was killed. I’m glad you shared though because I had thought about a block heater. No more thoughts - never.

Took my 2017 Taco in for servicing yesterday and they did the block heater & 3rd stop lamp recalls. When I pick up the truck and discussed the block heater issue with the service writer (I've never plugged in the truck) he informed me that they didn't fix the block heater issue they just disabled it. Toyota doesn't have a fix for it yet........unbelievable

that’s typical for car manufacturers, when F150 and expeditions were bursting into flames in the late 1990s-early 2000s because of cruise control shorting and catching the brake master cylinder on fire, Fords fix was to just unplug the cruise control circuit, took them another 2 years to start calling people to come back and get the real fix to get their cruise control back

It's been over 5 years since my block heater fire and all Toyota did was remove the block heater from my replacement vehicle that I have since sold.

I should try to get my money back for the block heater.

Just got my recall done last week - that being they just disabled the block heater. Asked the technician when an actual repair is expected and she said Toyota says the repairs should come out in the 2nd quarter of 2022 which is now (she was rolling her eyes at the same time).

I hope they get this done by Christmas because it gets to be -40 around here that time of year.

went for the blackout package this time
I have a 2017 access cab, and just ordered a block heater after asking the parts guy if the issue was fixed. He was rather vague about there ever being a problem, so now I'm nervous... I don't trust the guys at Kelowna Toyota. Does anyone know if the issue has been resolved yet? I see this post was back in June. From what I understand, there was a problem with the cord overheating, but in addition, a problem with the shape of the block? causing a gap. Should I go ahead and have it installed or abort the whole thing?

If the parts guy can't guarantee and show you that this isn't one of the affected block heaters, then I would abort and get an after market one installed at a private mechanics shop.

Hey, wait, you're in Kelowna....do you need a block heater there? ;)

Block heaters range in power from 400watts to 1500watts. I spend my winters at 3000ft asl, near Sun Peaks Resort, near Kamloops, B.C. I have a 400watt after market block heater and it worked fine last winter, even when temps got to - 25C. Also I doubt 400 watts is enough to start a fire.:D
