Maybe I've watched too many SciFi movies... couldn't some video editing software be used to filter the glare from the taillights to get at least a partial license plate? Although the car was probably stolen anyway...

As stated earlier, I work for a security company and we do get questions like that periodically. And unfortunately no. What's recorded is recorded. With the IRs reflecting onto an already reflective license plate, on top of headlights shining directly at the camera causing it to wash out some, the chances to "enhance" the footage to see something that was unable to be captured in the first place is gone out the window. I really wish it were as easy as it is on the movies though lol they do make cameras specifically for capturing license plates, but I do not have one on my house

Yeah its a really crappy situation to be in. But congratulations on getting a Tacoma! I've wanted one for years as well and got a really good deal on the one I have. So glad it is not totaled. Very durable trucks lol

it would be nice if all license plates had some sort of RFID chip that security cameras could scan....although that might be a bit dystopian...nevermind

Would it be worthwhile to make a few calls to local tow companies to see if they towed any chargers that night? You may be able to quickly track it down that way if you really think it was towed.

Sorry to hear about this random idiot crash.

I'm not sure what good it would do for me at this point. My insurance is going to cover the damages. So basically I'm out $500 for it. The douche that hit my truck probably didn't even have insurance anyway. On the bright side, I talked to my body shop and they are going to let me bring in a steel off road bumper I bought for it and a spare wheel and install it for me, and take the cost of the replacement bumper and wheel off my deductible. So my deductible should end up being $0 anyway. But would be nice to know that whoever did it got what's coming to them. But in a way I guess they did, seeing how they're car is almost guaranteed to be totaled and they can't file an accident claim cause then they'll basically be telling on themselves.

For anyone curious, I went ahead and uploaded a couple other angles from the incident so you guys can check it out. Here is the link. It's great having cameras to keep an eye out on your property, but I guess I might have to upgrade and throw in a license plate reader on my house as well lol

    Oh look, another mod....

Even if they catch the guy, it won't mean dick unless he has full coverage so your truck gets repaired (and you don't have to pay). Security Cameras, Dash Cams and big steel bumpers are great. But a lot of people don't have insurance, or don't have ENOUGH insurance.

You should always have under-insured/un-insured coverage, and make sure the limits are high enough to fully replace everything on your truck.

P.S. Sorry this happened to you man. Glad you're okay and that the truck will be fixed.

Thanks man! Me too! I was terrified that it had frame damage and was totaled. So relieved to know that it is fixable. I didn't even know about uninsured coverage and all that. Makes me even more relieved that my insurance company is going to cover it

Thanks pal! Luckily everything is okay and she's fixable. Life goes on. I'm hoping it will look better than it did before the accident by the time I get it back

    Glad to hear!
Is it possible that you might squeeze a new paint job out of it?

No, I wish! Lol. Oddly enough, I had it "paint corrected" at a shop just a couple days before this happened. It helped but still scratched up some. However, it does have a tanline on the front driver quarter panel from a decal when it used to belong to an energy company. That piece will end up getting re painted due to the accident, so the outline of that will be gone, but I hope the fresh paint doesnt stand out too bad next to the rest of the old wore out paint. I wish Toyota would just paint the whole thing lol
