Have you guys ever experienced humming from your Nitro 4:88 gears? The humming stops around 70 mph, but it doesn’t sound right. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I had 4.88s installed last year. they were noisy but mostly on deceleration at 70-85 MPH. a year has passed and here we are. the humming has been driving me nuts so i took it to the shop and the shop said that they needed to be replaced under warranty. i'm currently breaking in the new set of gears. so far it's much quieter but still get humming / whine at certain speeds. it's loudest at 70 MPH on acceleration only. decel is completely silent. I think I'll be able to live with this but from my research on this issue it seems some gear whine is normal on these trucks.

A reputable shop in utah. i'm part of a local Toyota group and everyone suggested this shop for gears. everyone I've talked to has been happy with their service as well.

Can you share the shop name? Or PM it to me? I’m local-ish to Utah and looking to get regeared semi-soon.

    thanks!

My truck had gear whine from the factory.

I just got 5.29's installed at ECGS, and guess what? They whine too.

The difference is, by the time you get around to re-gearing your truck, it probably has a bunch of mods on it. Tires will be loud, etc. I don't really think you should notice the whine that much. Mine is around 70mph on really light load. I need to have the radio off to hear it. Tires are 34" Nitto Ridge Grapplers, so still an AT tire, but relatively noisy especially over factory.

I insulated the *fuck* out of my truck with dynamat dynapad and dynaliner, it's almost as quiet as stock again.

(Which is to say still loud)

    So yeah, you ain't lying.

I like to hear my truck work. It gives me anxiety, especially when off road, if I can’t hear it. Radio off and windows down.

Okay cool, I was just wondering since it's not something that I've heard of often and will hopefully be regearing soon through ECGS.
