While I would typically agree with this, the 5VZ is an oversquare engine and should rev well into the 6k's - 6.5k ish range. The reason the redline is at 5400 on the 5VZ is due to the intake and exhaust design being so restrictive. Looking at the 5VZ power curve, you start losing torque around 4k RPMs and power drops around 5k RPMs. There was no point to increase RPMs past 5400; you'd just loose power.

The limiting factor for you would probably be the max / max efficient RPM of your Supercharger. The turbo would def love the RPMs but the TRD S/C quickly looses efficiency and right around 9-10 psi, its building boost by heating air more than moving air.

The cams on this engine are also quite conservative. Doesn't matter as much with a turbocharger, not sure on a S/C

I'd like to know if the rods are the same as the 3vzfe, which revs to 6600 IIRC.
Toyota also is known to lower the redlines on the trucks... example the 3rd gen rev limit is 6000rpm, but the same engine in the cars has a 6700-7000 rpm redline.

Cams are cams.. any cam is a turbo or S/C cam :).

Agreed... a longer duration cam will make you want to up the rev limit

With older engines and fixed cam timing and duration, you had to pick a low power or high power cam profile, generally paired with intake manifolds designed for low end power and/or high end power (ie, the 5VZ with 2 miles of intake runners = great low RPM power). I don't know if that is why the 3rd gens have lower power than the Lexus but my guess would be there are some internal changes towards a more conventional and less costly engine for the Tacoma. That or they just didnt see the need for higher RPMs (and lower engine reliability) in a truck?

The 3vz and 5vz had the same 82mm stroke and same crank; I'm not sure if the connecting rods were interchangeable. The 3VZ-FE did have a forged crank but the rods were still cast IIRC.

If your running e85 did you have to change any of the fuel line parts?
    Do a new tune?
    I know my new AEM 50-1220 340Lph pump says it’s E85 compatible,
Not sure if they all are

the toyota system can run e85, but you'll need to beef up the fuel system depending on how much power you are making. tune for sure.

Bigger pump and injectors and both are ethanol compatible but I didn't change any of the lines or else. Took the whole top end apart after about 10,000 on e85 and didn't find any issues but I would for sure think about redoing them if you want it to hold up to long term ethanol usage. It's just a fact that ethanol eats through rubber lines made for gasoline only but for short term use you might get a way with it for a bit.

Had to retune fore sure. Also not sure on the comment about the system being compatible with e85 but that would be nice.

Ethanol would be about a 10-15% HP increase for you. MPG would go down 15-20%. You can run a ton more timing, it's like running race gas.

All but two pieces are installed. Just have to finish TIG welding some stainless tee fittings for turbo water cooling. Then I will add coolant, dump this oil, fill it with break in oil and begin the whole process. Might be able to go for a first time drive by the weekend.

Must be the lower compression and/or the porting & polish. Lower intake plenum is also ported & polished. The cam that I got from Web camshafts through LCE went back and I'm running stock cams with stainless valves & stock springs. My valve lashes are also all in the middle of the clearance range (verified many times over).

I never got the complete story as to why the Web cam wouldn't work out. They were offering to do install them but I don't know what it would have taken for me to do it myself. Maybe the valve guides need to be changed to brass? I honestly don't know but the camshaft is on the shelf at LCE if anyone wants it.

Plan is now 450-500 on pump. Then 500+ on e85. Was also thinking of a 200 shot of NOS in the future. (shrug)

did you order the shim under bucket kit to go with the cams? that is usually the deciding factor
