Finished the timing chain ⛓️ replacement.

    PXL_20220615_231151298.jpg

This truck has had a long crank for years, now it fires like it did brand new.

The only thing I can attribute this to is when I put the new chain on I had to turn the crankshaft back almost half a link to line up with the camshafts.

Timing chains are so much better than belts. The only thing that happens, besides a very rare break, is they do stretch over time. It probably has much better power now that the timing is back in sync. How many miles did you have on the original timing chain. My last 2.7 was in a 2000 PreRunner. The guy I sold it to sold it years later with over 250k miles. Never even had a valve cover removed on it. Excellent engines.

Tonight I did my “halfway” front crossmember chop. I plan to fully get rid of it but am leaving for a wheeling trip tomorrow. However, for hardly any work this did quite a bit for my approach angle.

On our last trip I bent my transfer case crossmember skid up into the transfer case itself. I took the same approach as I have done for all of my other skids and welded up some angle on it to reinforce it.

I also think I found my final trash solution when wheeling. It’s a boat trash bag from Amazon. I can simply unzip the soft topper and toss whatever I need in there and rinse it off and clean it when I get back.

Tow hitch was looking rough. I’d hoped to find one local if it needed to be replaced, especially after finding out it costs about 1100 from the dealer…
I went thru 2 wire wheels on my grinder cleaning it up then bought a por-15 kit off Amazon; did the degreaser, then the metal prep, followed by two coats of the black stuff. Last step was to spray flat black paint over the entire thing.

I have been shopping for a new head unit. Pretty much set on a Kenwood for $300 at BestBuy. With the kit (bought off Amazon) it ends up being $352 total including tax. Not too steep but it has a dvd that I really don't need. It does have the anytime rear camera feature too. I ran across a brand online called xtreme audio. They are relatively cheap at $250 (sale price), have the Tacoma mounting trim made to the faceplate (like some others) and are android units with a ton of features. Install looks fast, simple and it has the camera connection, gps antenna, navigation, and 2 usb cables without a cd/dvd. I am curious if anyone here has purchased this brand and how well they are made. I don't want to be the TW guinea pig on these. The powered up features start at 9:30 in this video. They have a typical 1 year warranty.

i believe this is the one I used for my Kenwood which has DVD player in it as well. Yep reading the label in the pic states to allow video playback. That is also the dash kit i used for my radio. I have the OEM camera but the display shows on the radio and the mirror

Swapped rear shocks with takeoffs from a 2020 TRD OR. The nuts on the old ones were seized even after a 24h soaking of penetrating oil, so had to chop them off manually with a metal saw. Will tackle the front suspension swap this weekend.

Not at all. I thought I was going to have to fight the bolts, but I sprayed PB blaster on them about 30 minutes before I started. 1/2” impact did the work. You have all these to do on each side, plus two going in the direction of the red arrows. There’s a angle clip there on the other side; mine looked like it had been underwater for 5 years but it cleaned up nice. The blue arrows are where the crash bar the bumper bolts to is bolted to the hitch and where I circled in black are two longer bolts. These two gave me the most trouble, the whole design is just poorly thought out.

I finally gave in and dropped off my 2013 DCSB at the local dealership for AC inspection. So glad I did! They hooked it up to the fancy machine, found it was near empty on freon magic gas, evac'd and added 1.1lb of coolant. She blows cold as an Alaskan witch now. If you're suffering in this summer heat, give it a check.
