I'm also confused by this. You're worried about gas prices, but the cost of new traction boards arent a concern? Kinda like asking if I should buy a ferrari or mountain bike. They're two totally different things.

I'm with others on this. If I have to choose, get gas. I don't do any hardcore wheeling but plenty of middle of nowhere roads and I've (knocks on wood) never needed traction boards. It's never even been a concern. But I was once concerned with running out of gas in a remote part of Idaho.

I think I would just pay the higher prices to fill up and take the traction boards. How much of a difference in price/gallon are we talking here? You'll also eat more fuel hauling additional fuel along, subtracting your savings.

I like to save too, but for fun and enjoyment, screw it. BTW, I pay $5.60/gal here, regular.

I’d like to know where you are getting 3 gallons of premium for under $10

If I am concern of the gas prices at my destination, why not call ahead for gas prices? Compare the difference?
Times that by what you may need to fill up.
10 gals times the price difference? Let’s say 50 cent more times 10 = $5.00 . Carry $5.00 more? And leave the traction boards on?
    One dollar more times 10 = $10.00 . Tacoma has 21 gallons X the price difference = ?
Carry more money? Eat before leave? Lol

You’d probably save more just by not having them on the room rack decreasing fuel economy

I think there may be an app or website that has the cheapest gas stations around. Also the added weight in fuel you're carrying may cut down on potential savings.

Hard to be helpful. Lol Every one will have different thoughts and opinions. And he ask for our “thoughts “

Great answers, fun to read. Should I go to the bathroom first or later? Um? At least you have have the traction boards. To step on?

don't see the need for traction boards on forest service roads especially if you're both 4x4. Maybe if it was winter with snow or there was rain expected. Otherwise I mostly just use them to level the truck while sleeping in the tent.

“Premium” over what you would pay at home. Or $10 in savings if you dragged that gas with you.

    RAMONA,CA.
Faced the filler neck fitment issue and have since made an adapter that uses a piece of 1 1/2" pvc with a reducer to 1/2" piece. The 1/2" piece fits the neck and opens the flap on a Ford Flex. Just throw it in the back and you're good to go, saved a few others that had spouts that wouldn't fit in the filler neck.

gas in CA is like $5-6 at Costco.
Sounds like a free trial. Don’t worry. CO is trying to copy CA prices despite not having an ocean, the mountains being far away, having smog, dry high temperatures, and fire smoke

Jerry cans are for wheeling in 4LO for a long time which burns more fuel covering less distance
If OP was serious about miles per tank he’d have installed a long range fuel tank or bough an efficient motor like a diesel

Do you realize how dangerous it is to carry 20 gallons of gas over your head. If you got into an accident on the highway it could be a deadly. Do yourself a favor, if fuel prices have you that puckered don't go on that trip. I am the same way. I won't buy a fishing license this year because every time I would go it would cost me around 20 bucks in gas. I will just stay home.

Yeah, if only the truck had a trunk or hitch he could mount a shelf or box to.
