Brittle plastic guards on heavy-duty, metal-cutting, industrial machines. Makes sense to me...

That guide works on the saw pictured, because it doesn't have guide wheels in the guard location. Not to mention that saw guide slides up and down the length there, and a guard would stop it from being adjusted correctly for cutting a work piece.

I'm not trying to start a flame war over guards btw, just complaining that they're trying to make it difficult for us to use machinery we've been using for 80 years.

This is the first drawing we've ever seen where it had "GAS". Boss man should have confirmed what they meant before we assumed. We all know what happens when we assume something :D

Luckily I can run a 1/4" BSPP tap in them and fix them, I tried a sample piece for them to see.

I think 99.9% of people take those cheap guards off and throw them away from the beginning.

Is GAS and acronym then? I assumed "Gas" = "fuel".
The spindle guard hinges to change out collets and bits, and it's just like wearing a face shield. It stops or deflects projectiles, plus, it's supposed to help prevent clothing being caught in the spindle.

The newer JET saws have a V shaped guard that is bolted to the saw guide so it can slid with it and is slightly longer than the full length of travel of the saw guide. I just picked that pic because it was easier to see the guard.

We assumed gas as in natural gas. 1/4" gas pipe. That's what we get for assuming.

Not an acronym as far as I know, just an alternate industry term for BSPP. I guess as I do a fair amount of tinkering with British stuff, I'm more familiar with their terminology; NPTF never even occurred to me. That said... I asked Mr. Google, and he wasn't able to find (at least on a cursory search) any references to "GAS" relating to NPTF.

To me, those look like way more of a liability than a safety factor. A workpiece isn't properly secured, smacks into that, gets jammed, sharp pieces of broken plastic everywhere...

I'm just glad they can be fixed pretty simply without having to put an insert in the parts. There's about 20 of them.

I can see where the NPT assumption could be made. But probably would have inquire or machinist handbook, if not goggle.
