    2021 SR5 Tacoma Keys

My truck is a 2021 Tacoma SR5 AT 4WD Double Cab. I bought it new and it came with 2 three button fob keys. I swim, fish snorkel and generally spend a lot of time in and around salt water. I didn't want to take an electronic, $350 fob key in the water. 2 different Toyota dealers had no suggestions about how to get a water proof key. Sooooooo this is what I did.

    1. I bought 4 OEM Toyota key blanks on Ebay for 15 bucks each. Note that the blanks have an “H” stamped on the shank. This matches the “H” stamped on my factory keys. I understand that this means that these keys have an “H” transponder chip. (Part # 89785-0D140)

    2. ACE hardware cut the key blades for free.
At this point the keys would lock and unlock the glovebox, tailgate and the doors. Success! But, wouldn't it be great if they would start the truck also?

    1. I rented a key programmer from Tom's Key Company for $45 plus deposit. https://tomskey.com/

    2. I programmed the truck immobilizer to recognize 2 of the new non-fob keys. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. This step took maybe 10 minutes.
So. I now have the 2 3 button fob keys that came with the truck. 2 non-fob keys that open the doors and start the truck and 2 non-fob keys that just open the doors.

When I swim, I'll leave one of the fob keys locked in the glovebox and take a door key with me.

I'm out of pocket about a hundred bucks. Winner!

As far as those keys, the wife wash my pants in the washer, and then the dryer without checking them first. To my surprise the key still works fine, and that was over a year ago. Ever better their clean as hell.

    Excellent solution :hattip:

Those older keys hold up well. My 2005 Corolla used them... never had an issue with them.

For the same reason I had the dealership cut me a key for I think $15.00.

They told me to only use it for the tailgate, glove box, and doors. That's all I wanted it for. I keep the rest of my keys and shit in the console. Didn't need it to have a chip in it.

I stash it under the bed mat while at the beach.
