every video i find on youtube for installing speakers in a double cab says i should buy the special speaker mounts, or spacers i call them. can i install 6x9's in my doors without these spacers?

You need them, cut your own, Mr. Marv, Hookedontronics or Taco Tunes.

 

Or ghetto-chop your current speakers like I did. Not saying the quality is as good as poly baffles but the plastic around the factory speaker is actually very sturdy and it's free.
