I finally did the Cowl Snorkel Intake!
Overall I am very happy with the whole thing. One thing I need to change is the grommet around the 3" hole cut-out. I will need to widen the hole and put some kind of soft rubber. Maybe a bulb seal. The current hard rubber grommet is rubbing and knocking on the cowl when the engine is under load.
I drilled two 2" holes on each side of the cowl for extra air flow.

I already have plans to mount my new air compressor in the engine bay with all this room for activities.

    List of materials:
    • 3" OD stainless steel exhaust tube (12" long with a 15 degree cut)
    • 4" to 3" 90 degree rubber elbow (I trimmed 1" off the 4" hole side)
    • Rubber grommet (will be replaced with bulb seal)
    • 3" hose clamp
    • 4" hose clamp
    • 3D printed parts
    • Misc hardware

    Custom 3D printed parts:
    • HVAC mesh cover
    • HVAC Solid cover with supports
    • 3" pipe mesh insert
    • Oval mesh cover
    • Triangle corner mesh cover
    • 2" hole mesh cover
    • TRD hole cover
I am not sure if i want to post the 3D printed parts online as the design is far from perfect.

Here are some more pictures and information on the cowl.

I wanna say there is another big chunk of plastic behind the fender you could pull out also.

I think there is more air box behind the fender. It helps catch any dirt or water. I haven't had mine off though but I remember seeing it on someones post.

    Nice work @dpele !
I hadn't realized the water drain area. I'll have to make sure that area isn't full of rust!

    I will take a look!
I need something that will cushion the pipe from bouncing around.
    Something like this:

I already have a hard rubber trim but it is very loud.

Hell, I'd buy those parts off you if you printed another set (provided it wasn't too expensive). @Taco-Obsessed's and @Twizted's setups had me thinking about going this route, but this pretty much convinced me.

Hmm I guess maybe I should finalize the design and find out how much it would cost

I've never had any problems with mine (smogged maybe 3 times since the mod), and the OP on the original thread who came up with this is also in So Cal.

I can't remember if either CA reduced the requirements of the visual inspection, or if this one doesn't need a CARB cert because it really only re-routes the intake duct and retains the factory airbox/MAF install location. Either way, it's never been questioned where I go. The main thing anymore for cars after a certain model year is just to not have any active CEL codes.

I've passed smog with this mod installed at least twice, maybe 3 times in L.A. County (South Bay, where every 10th vehicle is a Tacoma and the shop has to know what a stock intake looks like). Only thing I can think is that since it doesn't touch the airbox or MAF mount that it's not even considered to be in the category of most commercial kits which tend to swap everything upstream from the throttle body.

Damn. It still sounds like it’s pushing the limit to me. Haven’t had any issues with the taco (stock intake) but tons of issues with my other vehicles even just touching the stock intake/filter/tubing.

I think that CARB backed off some of the visual inspection requirements around the time they ditched the dyno testing. I'm pretty sure the guy I go to (different cars on different years means I have at least one vehicle getting checked every Nov/Dec) mentioned that they're pretty much only checking for stuff like a "Y-pipe" on cars that are new enough to hook up to the OBD2 scanner.

What really bothers me is that CARB can't be bothered to approve the Thorley headers for the 4th Gen T4R V8. Bought a used one for a "trail rig" and I think it's got at least one crack in the system somewhere (known issue with the factory headers). It really amazes me that CA would rather have these trucks leaking unprocessed exhaust than having them running with an exhaust system that gets better power AND mpg without losing the factory cats...

I've got a full intake kit on my RX8 which does have a CARB sticker, but that one replaces the airbox, filter and MAF mounting tube with after-market parts (retains the stock MAF though).

yeah I have a carb legal intake for my C5 and am worried about when it’s smog time… I still have the stock intake in case lol. Also it sucks that it’s $$$$ for a carb legal one.

I think it depends on the inspector doing the visual. I've heard of both outcomes. Like @Alexely999 said, @Beer-toe just keep the stock part and reinstall prior to inspection, if need be, and then put the cowl reroute back. I got the part hanging in the garage if needed for my next inspection.
