48k OTD for a 2022 Tacoma TRD off-road a good price?

MSRP is a good deal in today’s market, but it may not be a good deal tomorrow. It looks like we’re heading into a recession and you’ll have to take that into account for the next few years.

I bought my truck (2022 DCSB with the leather seats and whatnot) for 47k OTD. Only add-ons were the all-weather floor mats/door sill protectors and stargard. In hindsight, I could have gotten stargard removed but that’s my own fault for not knowing how to do that before I bought my truck.

My wife and I decided having two hatchbacks wouldn’t cut it anymore since we have a newborn, dog and we like road tripping. Trading in the hatchback for the Tacoma was the solution to having more space. In addition to needing more space for things while traveling, in the past I’ve always relied on or borrowed a friends truck to gather firewood so that was another reason for getting the truck.

We bought at a time where interest rates were at an all time low, so in my case this was a great deal considering I got pretty much the exact truck I wanted at MSRP with minimal additional add-ons and that was the best the consumer (we) was gonna get. We plan on keeping this truck until it disintegrates and in our case this was a great deal.

Sorry I can’t give you a better answer, but I hope this bit of information helps you a little bit with your decision.

EDIT: Never before in my life have I ever considered buying a new vehicle, I’ve always bought used. The way covid affected our supply chain and made used vehicles become more expensive than new in some cases changed my mind about that.

EDIT 2: leather seats meaning TRD premium package which includes leather seats, heated seats, and the jbl premium package. Speakers aren’t the best but they work. We live in a cold area so heated seats are a huge win for us.

Financing isn’t going to be an issue I already got pre approved by my credit union and my revolving credit is good I have an Amex platinum and gold just to give you an idea of where I am at. My DTI is also like 5% I pretty much save everything(Roth 401k and Roth IRA plus other investments). Only reason I’m financing and not paying in full is since I’m trying to buy a house in a year or two. But I do agree I’ll probs wait since I am not in a rush.

Good point about tax and licensing especially in CA, registration is crazy high and sales tax is just shy of 10% so it would be about 5500.00 for tax and reg for this truck

THIS and property taxes. ..you figure bidding above ask was worth securing the home and the battle is over with the keys in hand.
then you get the tax bill, and a couple years into it you realize that bill is never getting smaller and EVERY election has a bond measure covered by raising the property tax, and it ALWAYS passes somehow!
Where are these majority constituents that say 'sure! i'd love to raise the percentage point levied against my home to pay for something not related to my home but ok, i'll buy it!'?

You think too much for a 21 year old. You're making a good salary. If you want the truck, get it. When you're 60 (like me) you'll think back on the good times you had in the truck, not if you possibly paid 1K more than you would have paid if you would have waited a little longer.

For real though. I see any price over 33k (what I paid new in 2018) and think its crazy.

Exactly. OTD would have been about $37k for me. Hard to calc as I initially leased, then bought it out 2yrs in. Someday, I will add it all up, but the total on the mod list is the one that makes me laugh. Fuckin' Tacos. :D

Careful, I mentioned people being stupid/dumb by spending money to modify vehicles they don't even own and a lot of people on this forum got in their feelings

Holy shit that's an aggressive FIRE level of retirement saving, nearly 50%! Great advice to follow if you can make it work, that compounding interest builds quick!

Not OP but I just turned 25 and made that much at 22 doing data analytics. No student loans due to scholarships and working as a paid intern while in college.

    Oh look, another mod....
Ha. I'm doing this very thing right now. I put a huge down payment on my 21' Taco and at the rate I am going, I'll have it paid off in 18 - 20 months. I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off, and in Tacoma terms that may be 20yrs.

I wish someone told me that back when I was 21. The sooner it's budgeted out the easier it is to maintain down the road.

If it is the truck that you like and the best price you can find go for it. Maybe negotiate with the finance team for some more off. Toyota maybe doing some good financing right now. Make them negotiate against your outside loan rate.

These trucks seem to hold their value.

Use the banks $ not yours. Even in a bad economy your money makes more in the stock market.

Lets say at end of the year you make 8% return on the $ you throw in stock and your loan loan is 1.75%. You still up at end of year.

Maybe I am wrong and should read the TW stock thread.

In good market conditions yes, but market has lost $7 trillion this year already and down 20-30%. Too volatile atm

This assumes you have $40k of liquid cash just sitting around to be invested into the market. It seems that most people that use this justification don't have the liquidity to purchase the vehicle outright, let alone the liquidity to invest the difference into the market....

    Don't impulse buy.

That 48k out the door will translate into a $700 / mo. payment for 6 years, and we aren't even considering the insurance you're gonna have to carry on it while paying off the loan. As others have posted, the price is the price. MSRP doesn't really mean anything anymore, but that's a discussion for a different thread.

While nobody can predict the future, unless you NEED (i.e. - Your wrecked your current ride), it's probably not a good time to buy.

Well, my old man convinced me at age 24 to buy the farm... literally. So I bought a farmhouse in the Catskills on acreage for $95k in 1997.
My friends had new cars, and took jack-ass vacations.... and I had a house payment, rent payment, and a beater for a car.

Looking back, it was the best move I ever made financially...

So yes, old fella's aren't just old... they're full of wisdom.
