I’m currently trying to get out of a dead end job and I was able to land an interview at a big tire place tomorrow. It’s for an entry level position (no experience required and they provide training) and I have 0 experience working with tires. I have over a years experience tutoring and 6 months experience in management but I am going to college for Automotive service management in the fall. Any advice? What should I talk about and what should I avoid? I am an Eagle Scout and I do most of the regular maintenance on my Tacoma.

Just show that you are responsible, polite, and you'll show up when they tell you to.
Changing tires is easy. They'll teach you.

How did it go? Sometimes the position you go in for isn't always the one you land which can open doors to other opportunities.

For some reason I never saw these messages before this. I got sick and had to reschedule the interview but I went in and the manager really liked me. I’m starting in late June after I get back from a vacation with my family. Honestly the hardest part is leaving my current job, I’m a math tutor for K-12 kids and telling them I’m leaving is so hard.

I had the same pain when I went from working for the council to working for the G, but having a few fun experiences and explaining to the kids what was going on in my life and how the change is a good thing helped. Just make a teachable moment out of it, like the better adult leaders you had during your time as a Scout.

And congratulations on landing a job in the automotive industry.

Will you be leaving this job when you go to school? If so It might have been better to stick with the Tutoring job until then. If you won't be leaving it then it could be used as applicable experience as you forward.

No I’m gonna stick here while I go to school, the manager said he would be flexible with my hours in the fall.

Today was my first day doing training and it kicked my butt. They had me shadow another tech and he was great, he took the time to really explain everything he was doing and pushed me into doing a lot of the work myself while he kept a close eye on me. By the end of the day I was taking tires off wheels, putting new TPMS kits in, putting new tires on, and balancing them by myself.

Water is super important, today I sucked down two water bottles and a big bottle of Gatorade that the shop manager got for everybody and I still ended up dehydrated. My back isn’t hurting as much as I thought it would so I’ll chalk that up to my youth and being smart enough to lift with my legs. It felt good too though, felt rewarding to pull a car out of a bay after finishing it. Coming from a sedentary job this is pretty much what I expected though. As soon as I got home I took a nap. Hopefully a full nights sleep will mean I’ll feel less exhausted tomorrow.

Apparently the manager that I interviewed with had to leave the company for personal reasons so the store I’m going to be working at has been shut down while the area manager rebuilds a crew. He told me it wasn’t performing as I should’ve been which is why he shut down the store instead of just promoting the next guy down the chain. I’ll start actually working there either next week or the week after.
