Goodbye 98 4runner. I loved you soo much.

    Now what?

I've been obsessing about buying a Tacoma 4wd but then used prices went up and I got distracted by the cybertruck but now am back and refocused.

What year and trim to get? aftermarkets?

I'm going to use it three ways
7 mile roundtrip to work daily (hilly suburbia)
offroad (from easy desert driving to one overland trip per year so it has to keep up)
highway to tuscon (500 miles round) 3x per year
i could haul a 2000lb pallet around a bit too.

i know that's 4 ways. That's how good of a truck tacoma is.

I don't mind buying the right truck for the right price, but prices are kooky in my area (case in point: https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/cto/d/encinitas-98-toyota-tacoma/7500473733.html)

My default build for a new one would be the following (with some dumb accessories) and I'd lift it 3" I think:
    2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road
    4WD, 3.5L V6 Engine, 6-Speed Manual Transmission
    Double Cab, 5-ft. Bed

Any opinions or send me packing to another forum?

Welcome. Have you test drove a 3rd gen yet? Fuel prices scare you? 3" lift with bigger tires?

yes. i drove a 2019 for a while and loved it.
is 3" a lot? I'd get the appropriate sized wheels so it doesn't look stupid. i sound like an idiot but I saw the dealer sells a kit as an accessory for 1400 that is a small lift but I'd like to invest in some nice knobby tires and not worry about crossing a wash or riverbed in the desert. my family has owned toyotas from 1980 or so across almost all brands (corolla hatchback, toyota truck '85, lexus, camry, 4runner, other lexus, etc. - not prius!).
