How does code P2442 disable cruise control

New member here, searched the form but can't find any reference to this question.

My Taco is a 2008 Prerunner, 4 cyl, manual tranny, ext cab. The cruise control began working intermittently last week. I replaced the cruise control switch with an OEM switch, didn't solve the problem. Looked like the spiral cable would be the problem, but before spending $230 on that OEM part, decided to have the local Toyota dealer (which I generally avoid like the plague) check the codes. The check engine light has been on for about 6 months due to a faulty oxygen sensor but the cruise has worked fine until last week. 157 diagnostic dollars later, the service guy told me the truck had thrown a P2442 code indicating a faulty secondary air injection pump and valve, which he said disables the cruise control. And for a mere $2,000 they would replace that faulty air injection pump and the cruise control would work again.

Simple question I had for them was, why does a faulty air injection pump disable the cruise control? No one at the Toyota dealership could answer that question.

So. I wanted to put that question to the group. Has anyone ever heard of a P2442 code disabling the cruise control? I should note the criise didn't just stop working never to work again. I was making a 500 mile drive when it began acting up. I could press the on-off switch repeatedly, and occasionally it would pop on and work until I turned the truck off.

This air injection pump/cruise control connection just doesn't make sense and I can't find any reference to it anywhere except at the dealer who can't explain it.

A nearby shop is going to take a look at it next week and after they confirm the codes they're going to do some circuit tests and see if they can isolate the problem. Thoughts?

The secondary air injection system faults may put the truck in a limp mode that will effect acceleration and speed. Have you had any issues with limp mode?

I doubt that the code is responsible for the Cruise Control not working since it was working intermittently before.

Thanks for the response. No, the truck has never been in limp mode, and this issue hasn't affected its performance in any noticeable way.

Continued to research but still haven't found any reference to a faulty secondary air injection pump disabling the cruise control.

I don't think the 4cyl trucks will go into limp mode because of a secondary air system fault like the v6 trucks will.

Can you turn the cruise light on and of with the switch?

Ah, okay re 4 cyl and limp mode.

I replaced the cruise switch with an OEM switch and the cruise light still does not illuminate reliably. However, the cruise will occasionally work if I depress the switch repeatedly.

Try holding the on/off switch down, turn the steering wheel and see if the light turns on or off when you move the wheel, if it does it's your clockspring.

Actually, appreciate all the feedback, but I figured it out. It suddenly occurred to me that I should check the brake switch just in case the cruise control was getting a signal that the brakes were on. I pulled the switch out clicked it a few times, put it back in and the cruise control works again.

Lesson learned about taking my truck to the Toyota dealer. They charged me $157 to tell me that I needed a $2,000 repair that had nothing to do with the cruise control.

That was next on my list of things to check, there are only a few inputs required for the cruise to work and there are few things that will disable it on a 2nd gen.

AutoZone will read codes for free. You can also get a cheap OBDII Bluetooth adapter to use with your phone that will read and clear codes.

Agree. That is why I said may cause it to as I don't know if the 4 cylinders have a limp mode for this.
