I was wondering the same thing, not sure if my local shop is ripping me off. I remember paying less than $2000 for a similar product back in 2010. I’m probably going to have to drive up to Sacramento and see if their prices are any better.

The camper top (Leer) I purchase , the rear window is removable and has a slider. I put several 12 foot lumber. The Side windows w/ lock can be open up. Easy to reach in the front of the bed with out climbing in.
With a taller camper top, there is more head room and carrying room.

Glad I got a white truck, save money from getting it painted to match.
paid $3,500 in 2019. The customize windows and locks got pricey. (Six locks) .plus the ski racks all were included. Install was free.

Leers prices have gone up with everything else. I work for a Leer dealer and think we have had 2 increases in last 6 months.... Also not sure how far of a drive it is to Sacremento but if I can manage to remember I will plug your numbers into the system at work and see how much of a markup your being charged. I am on the east coast so may be slightly different but shouldn't be too far off from out there.

On the Big island of Hawaii there is only one company that sells and install on our island. We can call order on line and have it ship. But ? Very little recourse.

Lucky for those who can choose the many different manufacturers. I understand you may have to drive more.
Leer , Snugtop, Ranch Truck Caps, A.R.E. American camper shells, ATC, etc. a few I found.

Wow, I'm glad I kept mine when I traded 2 months ago. Paid around 1800 2 years ago for it on a 2012 access cab. It was a Centry 100 basic with standard side windows, long bed with fold down rear window color matched to silver metalic. Fit perfect on a 2014 dclb MGM. Didnt have it repainted as they wanted 560 to color match it but it matches the TRD Sport decals, wheels etc. Looks good, I'm satisfied with it.

Finding a use camper shell , will save you money. Craigslist is good place to search.
$3,000 - $4,000 is a lot to spent for a new camper top.

if you do use your camper a lot? Worth the price. I always keep things inside the camper, and it rains a lot where I live.

Another option is to harass somebody selling a Tacoma w/ a topper on it. I picked up mine for $500 from a guy selling his truck on CL. Convinced him he would be able to sell the truck for his asking price either way so he may as well sell me the topper separately lol.

For what it's worth for the 100xl your dealer set up for you is pretty close to where I would end up price wise.

Marketplace and craigslist is of course cheaper though I have been looking for a used shell for a short bed for myself for quite some time and have yet to have any luck.
