Back in the day, someone had an old Subaru Outback and was bet he couldn’t make it into an off-road rig.

    Welcome to the Stupidrue

King coilovers, 3/4 ton drivetrain, 37” tires and NFG attitude. That video is the new owners. Still laugh every time I think for this thing.

True on both points. True that technically if it's past warranty they don't HAVE to do anything.

That said I agree if it's not a case of abuse (and clearly this isn't a minor thing, it's an engine potentially busted) then it would be perhaps wise to do something.

I’m in to see what Toyota says. I feel for OP, but Toyota has no obligation to do anything.

Anything Toyota would do for OP would be out of good faith. I really hope thats the result for his sake.

But warranties have to have a stopping point somewhere right? Otherwise they couldn’t sell extended warranties.

It is amazing what these engines store from a data perspective. We had a work vehicle spin a cam shaft 700 miles over warranty (FCA vehicle with their 100,000 power train warranty).

They refused to cover the repair due to the fact that when they pulled the engine data they found the vehicle’s idle time to equate out to about 140,000 miles worth of use despite the odometer showing only 100,700 miles.

Even the outboard motor on my boat, my boat mechanic can print out a report that details how many minutes my engine spent at various RPM’s.

If the engine was abused, there will be a data trail.

I hope Toyota is using the thermostats that open when they fail, rather than closing when they fail. Makes a big difference for the engine and wallet. My 2004 Ford that I traded in for the Tacoma was still on the original thermostat and heater hoses.

Did we not learn anything from the Terminator movies? When all these PC's, engines, and Rumba vacuums become self aware, we are going to be in a world of trouble.

Interested to hear what the issue is. Seems unusual for a Tacoma.

Don't really consider it a Subaru at that point, once you reach a certain level of moding it just becomes a purely custom rig with a Subaru body stapled to the back of it.

Hoping for a positive outcome for you OP! As others have stated, Toyota is under no obligation to do anything for you here but maybe they will do you a solid and cover the repairs.

But if you get a hard no, you might want to consider tossing out some sort of offer where they cover half and you cover the other half. Given how close over you were in exceeding your power train coverage, they might be willing to meet you half way. It would be better than having to fund the entire repair. Just something to think about and have in your hip pocket.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you! My brother lost his engine in his 2015 STi at 100k miles, it was 4 years into ownership. He had a 100k mile extended warranty, Subaru initially pushed back but his dealership argued in his favor and provided Subaru of America his meticulous maintenance schedule/routine and he got the top and bottom fully rebuilt by that dealership's most seasoned mechanic. That was 3 years ago and he's still going strong. I think he's up to 150k or 160k now.

If you had a good service record/relationship with your local dealership they may push to goodwill the repair. If not, Toyota is basically going to tell you to pound salt. People here hate the dealers but the auto groups I used to work for went above and beyond to help customers out in situations like this. I’ve seen lots of major repairs get covered for loyal customers or customers who at-least use the dealership for services while still under warranty. I’ll bet none of them are calling them stealerships when they seen 16-20k repair bills that were out of warranty be covered out of good will.

Glad the dealer I bought my truck from gives a lifetime powertrain warranty. Bad thing is, I had to drive 1.5 hours away to get it...lol.

Hope they cover this for you!
