You know what would be really funny?
If OP never told us the outcome, and we all just continued to speculate and argue about who paid for it and what engine is better.

The guys engine is broke. And that sucks for him.
I’m not paying for it, and I’d say neither is anyone else on this forum.
Yet, here we are arguing about things we can’t/aren’t going to do anything about.

I’d like to know what caused it. That way we can “maybe” know what to look for, before it happens to us.

OP, best of luck to man.

I say we all calm down, and let OP take this thread in the direction he wants it go?

    UPDATE #1
Service man at dealer called me today. Blown head gasket and they will likely recommend new motor due to blown gasket and “probably bad head and block”. Their not sure one root cause for blown gasket/ overheating and probably won’t know for a few more days.. more to come one that, but the man did confirm that they won’t cover a diesel hilux conversion :( more to come… Thanks again for the moral support!

I can’t tell you what to do, but I’d certainly want to know why the temp gauge was “normal”.
Basically, I’d be inspecting that circuit and sensor before I relied on it to “warn” me on the NEW engine.
I’m still puzzled on why it stayed in the normal range?

Blown head gasket just lets water into the cylinder/oil returns, does not necessarily affect engine temp unless sufficient amount of water is lost, but OP said he pulled over immediately.

Reading the original post it sounds like whatever happened was a sudden failure -- normal to bang in just a few seconds, the engine temperature may well have been normal.

I suppose that could be it.
In my experience, it’s usually the temperature gauge and lack of coolant that shows up first.
If the gasket blew and didn’t get the coolant hot. It failed big and quick.

True but typically a blown head gasket is from overheating. And even further if they say the head is bad it’s likely warped. Again from overheating.

This is an odd one for sure.

Same here bud.. their going to keep digging because they’ve (the dealership) has never seen anything like it. My money is on critical failure of the head gasket followed closely by bad temp sensor internals (or something like that) they should’ve had that shit error proofed if the latter but.. we’ll see what it is lol

It is really strange to see this. Will be interesting to see what they find. Warped head, manufacturing defect. I'd like to be there when they disassemble it to check the torque on the head bolts to see if they were factory torqued correctly. Measure the breakaway torque on each head bolt.

Yep. I’m thinking head gasket was defective, and failed in just the right way to not hit the sensor or something else failed and let it get to damn hot without warning
