Gen 5 ? (and no 6 cyl too)

    The fat lady already sung in regard to the US auto manufacturing market. Which was made most evident in 2019, been to a dealership lately.

    The next gen Tacoma is going to be much like what the competion has to offer, and those offerings are similar in size to a fullsize 1/2 ton.

    Not that Toyota, or any other manufacturer is going to build a compact regular cab, or a midsize that's what I'd like to see from Toyota. Maybe I just want a Jeep Wrangler, or Ford Bronco 2dr and don't realize it.

    Fuel economy and motorsport is not synonymous. Talking MPGs, and Offraoding in the same sentence why. Trying to accomplish both, and integrating that into a midsize is going to be a huge compromise and not effective in going either direction.

    4drs is what sells? Did the author forget that they just wrote about the dismal sales from Ford Chevy and Nissan in comparison to the Tacoma? They didn't sell 4dr trucks. I can't imagine how poorly all new aoutomotive sales were for June 2022. With the exception of Toyota no manufacturer sold a lot of midsize trucks, and I think those numbers were more robust when nobody offered a 4dr midsize in the US, and still considered compacts.

    Despite all of this, I am excited for the midsize truck market, and the next generation Toyota Tacoma.

    I’m curious what the mpg will be. I love my 2015 but getting 16mpg isn’t that great for commuting. That’s why I drive our accord a lot. 32mpg combined.

    That was a depressing read - I just happened to say how every Tacoma generation were very good looking trucks IMO. The new one may be like "like a scaled down Tundra with a big, blunt nose and an oversize grille". There goes the styling that I've liked, typical of many new trucks. I'd need to win the lottery to consider anything new, but it reinforces my decision to recently buy the 2.7L 5MT that I have sooner than my retirement. Looks like no conventional 4 cylinder at all, only with a hybrid configuration.

    I was disappointing to hear the last 2.7L with the 5MT was several years ago (2017?). Like other vehicles new offerings will be even more disappointing. Probably the manufacturers don't have a choice - it's to meet future fuel economy requirements. I like older proven technology. In fact my neighbor just called me asking to once again borrow my old, basic battery charger. He has a new 'intelligent' one
    that, like my new one - won't charge a battery if it gets down to a certain low level. I've used my old charger many time successfully for that situation.

    Part of my disappointment is I like manual transmissions. Like others I've had, I've exceeded the EPA ratings of my Tacoma. I do realize modern automatics are typically more efficient.

    I watched the video, and stumbled across the new Sequoia. The front end is similar to the Tundra, but better looking. So maybe the new Tacoma's front end won't be so bad.

    I miss having a manual. When I had my 6MT Tacoma, on the factory tires, I did better than the EPA sticker. My 4Runner is the first automatic I've had in 11 years. It probably does better on the highway for MPGs. I know it's old by being only a 5spd, but if shifts smooth enough for me. I drove a Silverado with something like a 8spd tranny. It couldn't make up it's mind which gear to stay in.

    That’s why I’m hoping I can get my 2022 soon before they start messing them up.

    Yes hopefully the front end will still look like a Tacoma in some way. 5 speed automatics are great IMO. I have a 4 speed automatic in my Silverado, and it never 'hunts' for gears. A while ago I assumed an 8 or more speed automatic is the way to go, then I saw road tests mentioning the frequent gear changing like you said. I wonder if the complexity of an 8+ speed automatic really makes a very significant improvement with fuel economy.

    Messing them up is a good way to put it. Subaru retired their very good engine, the flat 6 cylinder. Some will say their only good engine in addition to the old 2.2L. That's been replaced by a 2.4L turbo.

    I don't know - maybe the new drivetrains will prove reliable. From Toyota, they probably will. I'll still prefer my cave-man Tacoma with a conventional 4 cylinder and manual transmission. I guess part of the appeal of it is it's crudeness.
