Correct. I’m uncertain of the exact wiring logic, but would make logical sense to be tied into the airbag circuit. They tighten the belt so the occupant is pulled upright back against the seat in the event of a crash.

They're called "pre-tensioners." In a crash, they tighten the belts through the use of that explosive charge.

My understanding is that the explosive charge triggers the pretensioner mechanism that retracts the seatbelt instantaneously.

    Hey Crash,

I am about to pull the trigger on this head unit and a Metro wiring harness for my 04.

    Just a couple quick questions:

    1. Did the stock head unit brackets work with mounting this Continental head unit? Or did you have to get different brackets?

    2. The unit you bought TR7412UB apparently has a backlight display that does not dim when you turn the headlights on. I have real sensitive night time driving eyes and cannot have bright displays in the cab.

I read a review on Amazon that says the TRD7412-UB-OR model does have a dimmable backlight display but when I'm reading about it on Continental's website it says it's for a 24V system. Is there a converter or something else I can install to make this compatible with our trucks?

    Thank you in advance.

I didn’t buy it so I cannot say. I just saw it and thought it looked interesting. Not having a dimmable backlight would be an unfortunate oversight and you certainly don’t want a 24v based radio. I think the backlight color is slightly off from the amber color used in the Tacoma as well.

Yeah, the reviews (mostly for BMW E30s) say it's more yellow than orange/amber.

Thank you for the insight, as with all your posts/threads I really appreciate it.

Sent in my oil sample from my most recent oil change today. The first kit is a bit of a waste for data collection in some ways as the oil type is unknown, I estimate 4,466 miles on the current oil based on a 5k change interval and the window sticker noting the next change due and using a generic filter. But I figure it would be good to have a sudo base line.

I purchased an oil analysis kit from: https://www.zenginescore.com

The kit is way over complicated IMO, it includes ways to extract oil from the vehicle via vacuum or syringe and if reading the instruction booklet it mentions you can just sample it during an oil change at the very end of the book. Kinda seems like that is what they should have led with. You send in your oil sample in the pre-paid box and then they email you the full analysis report. Obviously a single data point doesn't provide much use, the idea would be to track it over time with different oil used to determine which oil provides the best performance and wear characteristics. I certainly don't expect anything revolutionary from this data analysis, but for $40 it will be fun to review the data.

I have oil analysis done on every oil change for my GT500 and Z06, but go with Blackstone Labs. Only $27 for Spectral Exam, Viscosity, Insolubles, and Flashpoint tests. $10 more to add TBN. No unnecessary complication.

LOL. I just found my old Kenwood audio system from my last 1st Gen in storage, with dual 8" B-8PTD Sound Ordinance under-seat subwoofers. I forgot I kept this stuff. I had it setup to run a deck mounted single DIN CB under the radio at the time. Not gonna lie, kinda tempted to reinstall this gear, but I'd leave out the CB.

I have that Sound Ordinance powered sub in my 98. Not a bad way to help round out some mid-lows. At the time I bought it for $50.

I remember coming across a low profile 10” powered sub that fits under our seats too. Might try to find that for my 04.

I still run the Sound Ordinance powered sub I removed from my 2004, in my 2013.

Here is a pic from how I used to have my previous 03 setup. The Cobra CB mounted there was great for trail runs. Now we use shortwave handhelds powered off of USB, no need to hard mount anything anymore and admittedly don’t wheel nearly as much as I used to.

    Hey Crash

Whenever you get a chance (no rush) can you take a picture of your high pressure AC line? I was looking my system over today and I think I'm missing the cap that goes over the valve.

    I’ll grab one tomorrow.

Also had the new wheels arrive yesterday. I’ve got tires on standby. Looking forward to getting the new setup installed next week.
