I’ve never done it besides adjusting pushrods on small-blocks, but I always did that by tightening the rocker until there was no play in the pushrod, just spin, then I think 1/2 turn after that. This will be a learning experience for me. Thx for the tip on the guide, I will check it out.

invest in a service manual. They’re a life saver. I may even have one.if I find it you can have it. I had a 92 4X4 with the 22RE. It was a great truck.

I'd be curious to hear your list. The 22r was a solid motor in its day but they had the aforementioned timing chain and top end issues, and a lot of them had severe oil consumption, even when new. I think there might've been a lawsuit over it.

IMO they improved their Iron block 4-bangers with each generation. On the 2TR-FE you don't even have to worry about valve adjustments or timing chains AFAIK, and they finally worked out the iron block Al head thing.

Anyway OP's truck looks pretty sweet. Great find!

I punished the f out of my 22R for over 2 decades relentlessly and it was a tank and begged for more. when I sold the truck in2009 it had over 750k, on it, burned no oil, still ran r12 freon ac and I wouldna hesistated to take it cross country or around the world. Not seeing that fi and a single roller timing chain instead of double would change things that much. We didn't have our 93 long enough to find out I guess. It only had 175k on the original motor when we traded it in for wife to have a different ride. Still had the 82 for at least another 12 years after that.

Oh yeah, sold the 82 in 2009 for 1/3 more than I paid for it in 82.....without any supply chain inflation bs going on.

I blocked that dude a while ago. The forum is much more enjoyable without him.

I don't speak for everyone but I'd definitely like to see updates on this truck. Sweet find!

Had it on the lift today and the underside looks mint, has a custom stainless exhaust with a Dynomax muffler (lifetime warranty, but I didn’t buy it) that is rattling like mad. I do intend to put a radio in it as I listen to music on my way to work and it’s very boring driving alone without one, hope there’s wiring but who knows. Going to get some wheels on Monday, and looking for a steering wheel but there’s not much local, hoping for a period-correct Sparco or Momo unit.

My first Toyota was a new 1985, last year for the front straight axle. Drove it off the dealership lot for $7,500 and 6 months later had a 3” Rancho lift and a 3” body lift. We beat the shit out of that truck.

Had an ‘85 bought new. Must’ve been a not so good year. They were known for leaking coolant at the head and I had to have mine planed down level a year later. Also, the AC busted a hose while driving after 12 months.. Kept it until 2000, bought a new 2000 Tacoma 2w manual. Was great until that 2000 got rear ended totaled. 85’s had issues.

Nice truck purchase...I had a red 1985 with automatic in 1994 and loved that truck until I was whacked in LA traffic.

Thanks for sharing...please keep us up to date on your adventure!
