SR5 Trail edition with Storage boxes

Does anyone else have the 2021 SR5 trail edition with the bed storage boxes? If so have you figured out a way to keep them dry? I have the factory tonneau, which leaks a little, but every time it rains, I drive in the rain or go through a car wash they are wet inside. It's gotten so annoying I have everything in dry bags inside if the boxes. Any ideas before I rip them out and try something else? They take up bed space but a damn handy.

 

Wet contents of the bed even with a tonneau are simply a fact of life. I've have three so far (two roll ups and one hard three sectional) and all of them leaked around the edges. Especially at the tailgate. Even the people with the bed caps (camper shells) often report leaking issues and those usually get some kind of gasket applied to them with caulking. I suppose you could put some kind of rubber gasket (home made) on the lip of the boxes and try to keep the water out of them. Personally, I'd probably just drill some holes in the bottom of the boxes if water accumulation is a problem.

They do look nifty, but I wouldn't want to give up that much bed space not that Tacos are known to have a lot of bed space to begin with. I'll stick with my removal, but very heavy, action packer container. And, my j-hooks attached to the slide rails for tools too big to find the action packer. The action packer's lid does a pretty good job of keeping water out. Mine is the 24 gal. The bedrug is a really nice addition. I don't that you can rip those out. They look integrated into the bed itself.

 

Boxes indeed can be easily removed. I took them out of my trail edition - no one wants to buy them so they sit in storage. They were too small in side to be useful (for me) and ate too much of my bed space.

 

Good to know they can come out easily. I was thinking that's a lot of bed space eaten by those not that the action packer doesn't consume a lot too but easy to move to the cab or removed and stored when needed.

 

My best guess would be the water leaking in has to be from between the bed floor and storage. Doesn't help the drain holes in the bed are also in the front near the cab not that much water if any can come in from it. Naturally water will go back to front based on going and stopping while driving.

 

Second thing I removed from my TE as soon as I brought it home, right after the air dam.

I've got one in the bed for recovery gear and compressor and that sucker stays water tight under the cover

 

the trail boxes are NOT water tight.....and take up too much space.....pull em out and some one will buy them......what i use is here - $29

will hold more than half of a full size human

I'm sure he just means it's the perfect size for transporting children. No biggie.

 

You’re right, myyyyy bad. Keeps the cab noise to a minimum.

 

I'd like to read the profiles of the geniuses that designed and pitched these boxes. Ditch them and put a waterproof box back there that you can move around to fit your load requirements.

 

I agree. My Ram had the Ram boxes and those things were money. Still had a huge bed and they were waterproof (at least in my experience). It was the only good thing about that truck.

 

Too many great solutions out there that hold more, take up less space, nearly waterproof, able to lock, stack, remove, etc etc to be dicken with those saddle bags.

 

It was a design by committee for sure.

I gotta ask, how tall are you guys who can access these from outside the bed of your truck? I mean, I love the idea of these things, which is why I got a swing case. But having to get in and out of the bed for access, taking up a ton of bed room and not watertight seems like a big swing and a miss to me.
