I got mine seven months ago. I like it. It does have quirks. That transmission sucks. But I like mine in spite of those grievances. I intend on keeping it until either it dies or I die. Unless my three year old wants it in thirteen years haha

You can't just look at the peak and say see they all make their tq high. The 7.3 tq curve is much flatter than ours. It's making 85%+ of its peak tq number at just 1500 rpm. No way our engine is doing that.

While I don't think the two engines should be compared the 7.3 kills us in low rpm power even when comparing % of peak power made.

Gear hunting occurs most with adaptive cruise control.

holding down then cruise control button deactivates adaptive cruise and it helps slightly.

Gear hunting and general transmission performance is most optimal when you have ECT on and using S4 or S5 depending on where you’re driving.

I can confirm this. Used ECT for both our 2900 mile and 2000 mile trips to NM and the UP in Michigan respectively and used S4 most of the way without issue. Still got 13.5 mpg towing our Off Grid trailer so all in all no hunting and the RPMs seemed right in the power band.

    Also,

L3 Harris didn’t choose the JT, ZR2, ranger or frontier as their test bed for their mobile VAMPIRE rocket launcher.

And we all know they could have payed MSRP for all of them.

Buddy of mine has a F350 with the 7.3, I have been in it going over mountain passes, fully loaded down….that thing has to scream. As most nonturbo gas engines do. The people on here who piss and moan about the Tacomas power, are the ones who overload the shit out of them.

For DECADES All of the Toyotas I have own have always been revvers, they have been that way historically, real happy at 3500-4000. This isn’t some new thing. If people fail to realize that, they are dumbasses. This is the most powerful engine Toyota has offered in their US small truck…and still people bitch and moan.

We must have passed each other. I was also knocking around NM in April. :cookiemonster:

It's a great truck for pulling small trailers up the hill. I usually get 15 mpg on highway, but I have to be putting along at 65 to achieve it. But it's been my road tripper of choice. That little camper has ticked off 27 states and counting. I still enjoy setting the play list on random and letting it eat some back country miles.

Not sure how this tracks, your main complaint with the 3rd gen is its lack of power, why is he wise for owning a truck with an engine that has even less power then the 3rd gen?

I sold my TJ Rubicon when I bought the Tacoma. Going from a 4.0 straight 6 Jeep to a 3.5 v6 Tacoma I can confidently say the engine has enough power. If you want to go fast, buy a sports car.

    Nice!

We were up around the Rio Chama valley area West of the Carson Ntnl Forest for about a week:

    IMG_20220414_140248266_HDR.jpg

Then we headed SE to the Santa Fe Natl Forest near Terrero. We were at the Davis willow dispersed site RIGHT before the fires hit, and had some 65mph winds that tore our awning to shreds. Lucky we got out when we did actually.

You don't own a gladiator, but I just bought one and can say I would rather have a Tacoma.

I guess I'd say it's not perfect, but it's not enough to make me trade.

Box stock, off the lot, the perfect truck doesn't exist........change my mind.

    Late to the party here….
I’ve owned two 2nd gen trucks and now have a 3rd gen. Also currently have a 5th gen 4Runner. My opinion, I love my 3rd gen and think it’s superior the 2nd gen trucks I owned. And having the opportunity to compare the two drivetrains daily I prefer the 3rd gen taco.

Why does the 3rd gen drivetrain do better than the 2nd? Just curious?

I don't need a vehicle to crawl over rocks, I need one to be dependable to haul me and my shit 40 miles a day, everyday and do what I need it to do with minimal modification. For over 36 years my five Toyota trucks have done that and in that time I've passed a few jeeps, Dodges, Chevys and Fords broken down on the side of the road. My trucks have never left me stranded.

Never cared for what Nissan or Honda had to offer, I always preferred the feel of a Toyota truck and how it drives.

Yeah I'm a Toyota fan, big fucking deal.
