It dawned on me today that the absolutely perfect engine offerings for the 2nd Gen. would have been 3.5L and 5.0L. Both naturally aspirated.

    Prove me wrong.

    And go.

    Toyota makes a 5.0?

    4.6 would be super cool

The 2.7 is too small in the absolute sense and the 4.0 is too small to be big.

Doesn’t the 5.0 make peak torque at like 5k?

Yup. In the Lexus F series (IS/F, RC/F, etc)

The 4.6 out of the Lexus GX would be phenomenal in a Tacoma or 4Runner.

To small for what? What Toyota should’ve done was stick that first generation tundra 4.7L in a Tacoma instead. Offered all the 3 engine packages.

I tend to agree. I have no personal experience with the 4.6. but, having to buy premium would really suck. On the other hand, torque up the ass at literally any RPM on 87 was pretty freaking sweet.

4.0 VVTi. They had the engine, would have been a direct drop in, 30+ more HP, smoother, better HP/TQ curve. Already in the FJC. Sheer stupidity not to have used it in either the 2nd or 3rd gen.

I had both the VVT and the VVTi engines at the same time, the VVTi was definitely the more responsive, smoother, and more modern engine with no downside other then the crappy oil filter set up.

Yeah no. 4.6 makes more power and torque, has an all aluminum block and the trans has one extra gear.

But, it requires premium fuel. The 4.7 made torque all day on regular gas. I wouldn't hate a 6-speed or even an 8-speed transmission, though.

And, I would bet that very few people here would actually give a shit about an aluminum block.

unrelated but I wish there was a Lexus IS with the LFA v10 and a manual
