Hello, I was wanting some billstein 5100 shocks for the front to level with my rear after I got an add a leaf pack, not to mention the front shocks are 20 years old so it’s sagged a little in the front anyways… I was wondering since I’m a broke college student if I could just buy a pair of billstein 5100’s off Facebook marketplace or if I had to buy them new, also I am slightly confused about something else- if I did buy off FB marketplace, do I have to buy ones specific to my 02 prerunner or are all 5100’s the same?
    Thanks in advance!

They are specific and there is multiple versions. Go on their website and find the part number. Might be able to find a pre assembled strut. Would make it much easier and safer. My strut compressor almost failed on me doing mine.

I would not buy used non-rebuildable shocks on facebook.

5100 are made for each car differently. So for the first gen, they are probably shorter then they are for the 2nd/3rd gen. And Ford F-150 probably has taller shocks then Tacoma.

The other difference might be between the 6 lug Tacoma and the 5 lug. 2wd and 4wd are most likely the same.

as far as buying used, it’s a gamble. I buy a lot of used items. Just inspect it and hope that the seller is honest about the use and Milage. The Bilstein 5100 should be good for about 60k-80k I’m guessing?

I bought a set of bilstein 6112/5160 off Craigslist for $500. Seller stated that they had about 10k on them. I had them on for another 30k already and so far, so good. The only thing that wore out is the bushing that the bolt goes thru on the lower Control arm. Look at that when buying used shocks.

Bilsteins 5100s are not that expensive IMO. Id say just save a little bit more money and buy new ones

A lift, some wheels, some tires, some performance, some cosmetic and then audio.
Buy once and cry once. I would look into some new front coil springs and 5100's if you want the best on a budget. Honestly, I would save up for a while and just do it once when you get the funds.

Thanks everyone! Stuff got super busy so I haven’t been on in a while but the new struts are on! Me and the boys did em ourselves and it only took a laughable 15 hours of straight work and a lot of energy drinks LOL! (Amateurs am I right). Anyways thanks everyone for the help, I used 5100’s and some moog coils.
