What is this?

Tried searching but no joy. Just some little slots on the dash just forward of ignition switch on a 2020 SR5. Just curious.

 

Whisper sweet nothings into it and see what happens.

 

Temperature sensor for HVAC.
Or… NSA microphone.

 

There is a speaker around the instrument cluster (Shown when disassembled in this video), the three slots are to allow the sound to be un obstructed so you can hear them when they go off.

Thanks... figured some sort of buzzer or similar behind there. Otherwise a vent hole for the smoke to escape when the electronics behind it fry. - ha.

Toyota engineers put a spy cam behind there, during their breaks they laugh at people peeking in there and talking to it, trying to figure out what it is.

 

It's the opening for the cabin temperature sensor. It tells the AC amplifier what the cabin temp is which can then be compared to what the system is set to so it can make adjustments.

 

Is there enough room around it, below it, next to it, to put in a 2 Port USB charging outlet? Might help with some of my cable cleanup, shorter cables to phone, etc.
