Same here, would rather do stuff one time. Marine Grade shrink tubing works good on keeping water out of those joints too.

Right you have to work with what ya got, you could cut the blue covering off and just use the crimp inside and then slide heat shrink tubing over it.

My dad is presently only an hour away from where I am going, but for business instead of pleasure. We will be meeting up for dinner on Thursday night and going to the car show together on Friday before he drives back down to PA. I have never driven in New York before, and the closest I came was when drove up to North Jersey a few months ago to take pictures of the Sopranos house.

My dad said that NY State Troopers were everywhere and a lot of people were getting pulled over. My dad himself was the victim of a speed trap in Felton, Delaware back in 2018 (64 in a 45) because he wasn't closely monitoring the rapid drop in the speed limit. We had been driving to OBX for vacation and, needless to say, my dad used cruise control for the rest of the trip. My dad also has a radar detector, and I don't.

In Pennsylvania, 5 MPH over the speed limit is considered a parking ticket and won't show up on your driving record or result in any points. Suffice to say, when someone gets pulled over for going considerably faster than that and takes it to court, this is what it is generally reduced to. As such, police don't generally pull people over for going less than 6 MPH over the posted speed limit. I got pulled over for 43 in a 25 MPH zone in Doylestown back in 2017 and it was reduced to 5 MPH over in court.

I set the cruise control at 5 to 8 MPH above the posted speed limit on the turnpike, which is generally 70 MPH in PA.

Also, Pennsylvania is noteworthy in that state law prohibits local police from using radar guns to catch speeders, which makes it harder for them to catch in my opinion. State troopers in PA do have radar guns, but I've never been stopped by a state trooper.

Unfortunately, I remember reading that in New York, going 1 or 2 MPH over the posted speed limit can get you points on your license (though this only applies to people with New York driver's licenses, and out-of-state drivers just get a fine). When my dad got a speeding ticket in Delaware, the deal was that if he just paid the fine and didn't fight it, it wouldn't go on his record. Seeing as my parents and I all have Pennsylvania driver's licenses, I don't think a speeding ticket in Delaware would go on any of our driving records. However, it could still affect insurance rates. Luckily, my dad's insurance rates were not affected.

That said, my plan for for avoiding getting pulled over in New York is to set the cruise control at exactly the speed limit, but I'm still worried that going even 2 MPH over could result in an encounter with a state trooper. I also don't have a radar like my dad does.

What does everyone else think of this?

Yup! 1 to 10 MPH over the speed limit in NY means 3 points on your license on conviction! Luckily, I don't think you get points on out-of-state license...

I'd imagine that one's insurance premiums might be negatively affected, but I don't think anything short of a DUI in NY would follow a Pennsylvania resident back to PA. For the record though, it takes 6 MPH or more above the speed limit here in PA before you have to worry about points. I've never come close to losing my license, but I've heard that going more than 30 MPH over the posted speed limit can result in a suspension of two weeks or more upon conviction.

the speed limit is set for a reason, doing a few miles an hour of the limit won't get you there much faster. When I was younger, I used to be jealous of all the people flying past my parents who'd typically drive the speed limit. Now I see those same folks in a ditch a few miles ahead or pulled over, and I usually give myself an internal chuckle which is my self check for knowing I did the right thing.

I'm not sure how far it's gone so far but I know in PA legislation has been introduced that would allow radar use by local authorities in addition to state police putting us more in line with surrounding states. Personally I think this has far less to do with public safety than it does with increasing revenue.

I got pulled over in VT in early 2019 by a local sheriff when I entered his small town and they had radar set up. Speed limit dropped form 55 to 30 and I didn't catch myself in time to scrub off that much speed. I was likely going faster than the posted 55 anyway. My g/f saw the radar unit off to the side and I saw his unmarked car alongside the road ahead of me. He hit the lights and I pulled over almost right in front of him. Bear in mind we were on my bike and if I was foolish enough I likely could have outrun him but sooner or later that gets you in REAL big trouble so I don't see any point in it. She hopped off the bike and I removed my helmet as he approached. I pulled my paperwork and handed them to him as he informed me why he lit me up. Not like I didn't already know. Because I was polite and cordial he extended me the same courtesy writing me up for less than the speed they'd clocked me at and reduced the fine. Zero points against my PA license provided I pay the fine within 10 business days or I could return to VT to appeal it. Cost me $153.00 and I paid it using their website the day I got home so I didn't forget. Dianne thought for sure I'd be pissed off and I just laughed about it. Mentioned to her how many times we'd done blatantly stupid shit when we were riding. Not outright unsafe or dangerous mind you but against the law in many cases. I just looked at it like a trip to Disney. The rides are free but that admission ticket is a killer!

Some states have reciprocity of their point systems but in most instances I'm familiar with if the fine is paid within the time window allotted they drop the points for out of state.

I travel quite a bit, mostly on motorcycle, and when I do I generally ride just slightly faster than the flow of traffic on any given road. I just came back from a trip to GA and a friend and I were often at 77-79 mph in a 65 zone and we passed more than a few police on the trip. Reason I think we could do this is that most surrounding traffic was doing 75 and so we didn't really stick out. We used our turn signals when switching lanes, allowed safe following distances, and never cut directly in front of anyone. I think this allowed us to blend in almost like background noise. I had a PA state trooper that was a good customer at the dealership I used to work for and my riding style goes along with what he had told me. Be smooth and don't stick out.

The thing is, I literally don't know how fast I'm going at times. According to my GPS, my speedometer is off by a couple miles per hour. I'm hoping that Waze will help me stay at the speed limit. Also, I 100% support the police, but it would take a real dickhead of a cop to give a guy in a 4-banger automatic pickup a speeding ticket for going 1 or 2 MPH over the speed limit; I also made sure that my window tint is legal in New York so I would be prepared if I got pulled over for seemingly no reason. My window tint is legal in Pennsylvania and most other states, including New York, but it is illegal in New Jersey. My uncle is a cop in Edison and he tells me that I likely won't get bothered for it because my truck is registered in Pennsylvania and cops in Jersey generally don't pull people over just for window tint. Not that I really give a shit either way, because I think that I should only have to abide by the motor vehicle code of the state my truck is registered in!

Well, in Pennsylvania you have to be going 6 to 10 MPH over the posted speed limit to get 2 points on your license. Since the threshold in NY is 3 points for 1 to 10 MPH over, I don't think that would transfer. My philosophy is to be as respectful to police as I possibly can, which has worked in my favor most of the time. If it doesn't, then I take it to court and contest it; I have never ended up with points on my license after contesting a traffic citation!

What tint is legal in PA. I thought none. Or just factory, mainly back windows.

Front windows must let 70% of light through, and rear windows there is really no limit; I have 26% window tint on my truck, which is the highest I could get at the place that did the job without violating the law in PA...

Most of the times you will be fine. Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law though. “I didn’t know I was speeding” would never hold up in court to a “dick head cop”.

Also, my dad's 2013 Honda Pilot Touring had not only tinted windows, but sunshades that came of the rear doors. This was great when I would watch movies in the backseat on long trips. The trip to OBX in 2018, where my dad got a speeding ticket in Delaware, is the last big roadtrip we took in the Pilot before my dad got rid of it. Before COVID, my dad was putting 20K miles a year on his vehicles between work-related travel and family vacations. The 2004 Honda Odyssey EX that the Pilot replaced had over 130K miles despite being nine years old. My dad bought the Pilot new in May 2013, and it had literally just under 100K miles when he traded it for the Yukon in November 2018. There was nothing wrong with the Pilot, but my dad wanted something bigger and with a V8, so he bought a certified preowned 2018 GMC Yukon SLT with like 8,200 miles just after Thanksgiving in 2018. My dad probably put over 20K miles on it from December 2018 to March 2020, but then COVID happened. as of this post it has just over 45K miles, which is about right for a 2018 model in mid-2022...
