Contemplating this tune. What exactly does it change? Timing? Trans? Torque converter? Fuel? How does the dyno show a 40+ tq at 3250? Why would Toyota leave this much power on the table. I tow a travel trailer and would love that extra torque, but don’t want to damage the engine with too much timing, or burning up the tranny with towing 4200 lbs. I’m just a little skeptical and leery of tuning a truck while still under warranty.

I tow a 5100lb trailer and it makes a difference especially down low RPMs.

I don't know the specifics but it has to save wear and tear on the transmision with smoother shifts and few hard downshifts. @PapaRee can explain more on engine changes. My truck was so miserable to drive I was willing to take a chance before trading it off. I think you will be glad after you have it done. They will change you back to stock if you don't like it.

I've been tuned (starting with OVTune) since 2018 (and under warranty) and now with KDMax since it was released last year and I've never had an issue. I also tow a trailer/camper weighted at 4200lbs and it's much much better than stock. Any of the top tunes are going to be done within safe parameters.

The software (Vftuner) gives us the ability to change shift points, throttle, air/fuel, ignition timing, port/direct injection, torque converter, cruise control, ECT, and more.
We make a tune that feels powerful and has good drivability. We monitor temps, knock values, speed, pressures, etc. to make sure we are as good as or better than stock.
    You won’t be disappointed!

Thanks for the explanation Kreg. I'm sure you have explained it before but it's hard to find in all these pages of posts.

    You’re welcome.
It’s easier to just let someone test drive the tune and see for themselves. It sells itself.
When people ask me about it, they always find it hard to believe that Toyota messed up the stock tune. I tell them that I am also surprised that it’s so bad. I have driven the new Tundra- it’s tuned great! I’ve driven 4Runners, Camrys, Highlanders, etc.. they are all tuned pretty good. I just don’t know why the 3rd gen Tacoma is so bad—but I am glad that we were able to make it better!!

He's right you know. This was a customer that contacted me Tuesday and said he loves his truck but was still interested. I talked him into trying it out/coming over after I got off work and said I guarantee it anyway. Which is easy to do because I haven't had ONE single customer want to go back to stock. Anyway, I put KDMaxPro+XT on it, we went for a drive, and we didn't even get a mile before he turned around.

Just get the KD MAX PRO+XT!
Got the normal throttle on my lifted Taco with 33” tires. It shifts and drives without hesitation now with this tune! Phenomenal work by Dave & Kreg!

I agree with you totally. We also have a new Highlander than is tuned well. I am surprised the magazine reviews don't point out the problems with the Tacoma tune. If they did, Toyota would have to fix it. Maybe the 2023 will be fixed.

Hey guys I have had my KD Max tune for quite some time now but I have noticed something that seems odd so thought I might ask about it here. I do the tollway I lot around the DFW area. Cruise control on 75 normally. The truck will hit a hill so it downshifts and goes to about 3200 RPM's to get back up to speed. It gets up to speed and the terrain is now flat but the truck hangs at that RPM for quite some time. If I bump the throttle just a bit it revs up momentarily then settles back down and upshifts it seems a couple of times. Has anyone else noticed this? Normal CC, not the Adaptive stuff. I do not use the Adaptive stuff.

FWIW, I tuned my 3 month old 21 OR with 1,800 miles when the kdmax tune was first introduced. Since then I’ve continued to update to the latest tune…

Without a doubt the best investment a person can make to their truck.
Cruise Control on my +XT tune behaves the same way. If given enough time it does eventually downshift from 5 to 6, but it takes a good while.

I've experienced this too, where it doesn't shift back to 6th when I feel it should since the road is now flat. I've seen it on other tunes too. I'm stock other than one size up in tires (LT Wildpeaks).

I can't wait to get this tune. Our friend's son brought his 2020 TRD OR DCSB over to let me drive the Regular tune. I was sold on it before I left my neighborhood.

Yesterday I flashed my truck from PRO regular to PRO+XT Lite w/ AGM support with my own "Juice" Kit (4th of JUL sale). Now, I can update anytime. All I can say is the latest version is much more refined than the previous ones. This is how these trucks should have come from the line...I know you've heard and read it before. If you haven't done it, better late than never. The best part is the customer support from @PapaRee with my initial setup. He will be there for you. I knew I woke him up yesterday, even though he wasn't feeling well...You Da Man, Kreg!
    Thank you!
