I have toyed with installing a LRFT for a couple of years now and I think I m going to finally pull the trigger. I make a lot of trips to Northern Michigan and having to fill up again before I make my destination is getting on my nerves. I figurre the extra 12 gallons will get me about 150 extra miles with my 13mpg

My only concern is clearance and I'd be loosing my gas tank slider. I wheel and my skids show their effectiveness. Being naked under there would leave me uneasy...but maybe its not that bad.

What say the hive?

 

That would beat adding a 150-200lbs of sand every winter ....

 

Extra 12 gallons is about 75 lbs.

 

If you’re actually bouncing off your skids, what’s more of an inconvenience; ripping open your gas tank on the trail or making one or two more gas stops along the way?

(just where my mind goes anyways, your call)

LRA has an integrated skid plate option that adds 3/16” of additional plating on the bottom and runs about $900 with additional labor. I can post some pics later today.

 

Respectfully, it seems like your question is another "I want everything" type.
You wheel, you made mods to do this task.
You willingly gave up efficiency to do this right?
You also travel long distance. Your off road mods shortened range.
You now want to mod to extend range.
Doing this will limit your off roading.
See the viscous circle?
My advice? Take your mods off and go long range.
Keep your mods on and keep fighting that never ending circle of mods until that next week link.

I have looked at this one before. I like the location a lot better and I keep my spare in the bed so no loss there.

 

It’s a little gloomy here, so pics are dark, but you can see the LRA tank, it’s skid plate and the frame rail.

 

We installed a few and sold a few but not to mention we run one on our tacoma. Its great other than sticker shock at the pump. Let us know if we can help you out with getting a tank when you are ready .

 

I have one, installed by Asheville Vehicle Outfitters. I really like the range increase it provides. Yes, you lose the wimpy stock TRD-OR plastic skid-plate over the plastic tank, but that skid plate was so flimsy it never gave me much confidence in the first place. The LRA tank does hang a bit lower than stock, but there are other components that are lower (for example my most-rearward skid-plate from ARB) - so I am not too concerned. Over 1+ years of off-roading, I do not have any damage to it, but I also do not do rock-crawling (more of an overlanding fan). I recently did the Jeep badge of honor trail Black Gap Road in Big Bend NP (Texas), plus many other trails there, and there wasn't a scratch on the bottom of the tank (but some skid plates did touch and got dented).

My goal was to reach close to 50 gallons total, which I did with an additional 17 gallon auxiliary fuel tank (usable 15 gal capacity) plus pump and filter. I installed this tank against the bed bulkhead, right behind my ARB drawers. Perfect fit and functionality.

There are a few things to pay attention to:
- Total usable capacity is 32 gal.
- You lose accuracy on the trip computer (range) and fuel gauge. But the important (to me) readings of ½ tank and below are working fine.
- I developed a small chart to tell me left over capacity at each point of the fuel gauge readout, and it works for me
- There are a 6 gallons left when the low fuel light goes on, and 4.5 gal when you reach "0" range - if you keep driving for a while you will get an error message and CEL, due to the mismatch between the fuel level readout and continued use. Easily resettable via the Nav unit, or, it resets itself when you fill up.
- I like how it fills up easily - none of the slow filling and air blow-back of the stock tank if you try to fill to max. On the LRA tank, when the pump shuts off, you can see the fuel level a little below the filler neck opening.
- Keep in mind the weight - the tank adds about 100 lb (metal versus OEM plastic), plus the weight of the extra fuel. I am using OME Heavy Load springs with the add-a-leaf option (due to the rest of my installed stuff) and I only see about ¼" lean driver side when the tank is full.

The general consensus is that the LRA tank more or less is it's own skid plate, plus it's easily repairable if you do have an issue unlike the plastic one. It's also technically just a hair more clearance than the stock tank.

I haven't installed mine yet but I have one sitting to the side ready to go.

 

I have a Titan Sidekick 15 gal tank that fits on the side of the bed. The tank uses a auto-prime siphon hose to refill the main.
