receiver drop question

    Tow a 15" Smoker Craft Alaskan aluminum fishing boat with a tongue weight of 250lbs. Truck is lifted and the measurement shows i need a 5" drop receiver. They seem to be hard to find around here... can I get by with a 4" drop? Got the rxt leaf pack (at option 2)... there's no sag of back end when trailer is hooked up.

    Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    You can try it see how it pulls .

    I have found to much weight on the trailer can be like dragging an anchor .

    Worse case have someone make you a 5" drop I have made a few custom receiver inserts over the years.

    I see it just about every day.
    I live 2 miles from a public boat ramp.
    I’d say 60% of all the trucks pulling a boat here are not level.
    The front of the trailer is high.
    Mostly for the same reason as you. Lifted

    I wouldn’t worry about an inch. If you are that worried about it. Load all your fishing gear in the bed to help sink the rear a bit. But 1”, no. I wouldn’t worry about it.

    Plenty of options out there. If you are in a smaller town and don't have Lowes or a Wally World or a couple of Auto Parts stores you may need to wait on shipping but most big box auto parts stores carry the 5 inch drop hitches (Autozone, Advanced, O'Reilly). If you know 5 inches is exactly what you need (that's what she said) I would go with exactly what I needed for my trailer to sit level. That is just me though - being off by an inch on the height probably will not kill you as long as you are within the 10 - 15% golden rule for ball mounted hitches.

    Quick question. I see some receiver's are slanted back and some are straight down... any advantages/disadvantages between the two towing wise?

    I drive a Miata.
    Assuming they are rated the same, not really. The only real difference is distance from ball to receiver pin. Some people like me want that distance to be as short as possible to lessen the lever effect of weight-behind-rear-axle. Others want a long distance to keep their ass-end out of the water when launching. In real world practicality, the couple of inch difference between an angled drop and straight drop is negligible.

    What was the max tongue weight stated on the receiver. Also what is the trailer weight?

    The ball mount says class III/IV and "capacity TW (lb) 500." I've never weighed the boat/trailer but think maybe around 1,500-2,000 lbs. I've checked the tongue weight... it comes out to 260lbs. It's a 15' aluminum Smoker Craft Alaskan with a 9.8hp and 4hp Tohatsu outboards on back, Minnkota Powerdrive up front, 2 batteries, 2 external gas tanks, 2 down riggers, and around 200 lbs of gear. I could probably get by going with class 2 but figured if my weight is off class 3 should take care of it.

    Oh you would be perfectly fine with that reciever. That trailer wouldn't have close to that tongue weight.
