I like my ‘05 in an entirely different way from my ‘16. Sort of like how I feel about my kids.

Idk about 3rd gens but my R150 can be pretty notchy, especially when cold. Sometimes it needs a little extra encouragement to get into 1st and 3rd.

The irony is, they border line over corrected with the g2 manual.. its touchy! Lots of torque at the very beginning of the power curve. The exact opposite of the g1, which required you to over rev the motor, then drop the clutch. I'd absolutely love love love to drive a g3 taco manual... maybe one of my deposits will pan out.

    I've owned a g1 5 speed and now a g2 6 speed. I took an auto PRO because I'm still on 4 lists for a lime g3 manual...

The g1 to g2 was unbelievable.... I remember when I got it. Looking over at 6 on the stick. I still own that truck. 350k later and one clutch rebuild (not my fault I taught my niece to drive stick). The 6 speed g2 was the correction to your stall problem. Imagine being on loose rock at 30 degrees !!!!!!! So toyota gave us a six speed, first being a torque yielding borderline "granny gear"

I drove two 2nd Gen MTs with over 140k back to back. One was a 2.7l and the other was a 4.0l. Both felt natural immediately. I test drove two new 3rd Gen MTs and other than the odd engagement point, they felt the same from a test drive perspective. Yeah, my 3rd Gen needed a few mods down the road, but approaching 80k, I feel it is as tight as new, much like those 2nd Gens.

It's an electric motor. You put it in gear and push the accelerator. The electric motor doesn't need to spin to stay running like an engine.

I've owned all three gen trucks with a manual. First gen got to 1/1 in 4th gear. 5th was an OD. Second gen got to 1/1 in 5th gear, 6th was OD. 3rd gen gets to 1/1 in 4th. 5th and 6th are OD's. That's one of the reasons people think the gen 2's are torquer. I don't think they are, but their gearing makes it feel that way. Each, in there own way, was very fun to drive.

Drive by wire manual? Haha would be kind of funny to basically have "flappy paddles" but it is a stick on the floor so you can pretend you are shifting. Maybe only engages when you push in the "clutch". If it ever comes to that, I'll just get the auto and call it a day.

I used to be into S-10s and when EVs where just taking off they had people who'd convert them. Replace the engine with an electric motor and underneath the bed was full of batteries. Point being though, the recommended way to do that was with the manual at the time! Since the batteries was only a single speed, you could better adjust the truck speed with the gears.

6MT with Premium and Technology packages is the way to go! I like all the extra features but still getting the manual, and Toyota is pretty much the only (affordable) one to do that anymore.

And exactly what I have on "order" (i.e. deposit down for a specific build); I put the request in during the second half of February and my sales associate said, "Kind of a unicorn, figure at least six to eight months; maybe never." I'm still waiting.

For me the 5 is preferable, 6 has an unnecessary and mostly useless gear.

The I4 has no balls but delivers steady at all times. The 3rd gen v6 has balls at high rpm but is pathetic at low, certainly tune related at least, I trust Tony that it’s fixable and even if it isn’t I still like it for what it is.

50k on the clock vs 130 is another difference. Even with new transmission fluid the ‘05 is less refined. But the Beaty of the 5 is how basic it feels. A throwback to days of my youth. Who needs smooth anyway?

Long term I hope to do an EV conversion for the ‘05 since it’s so basic but we need prices to come down a little bit. I see a 4000 lb EV w 80 mile range that can dink around town and do wimpy truck stuff. For now the I4 fits the bill fine.

Lol....you have a small collection too . I know why.. each truck does one thing better then the others:)

For a ski truck? 4runner hands down

Here is why. If you take 4 skiers in a taco. No room 4 the boots. Soo they sit in the bed. And are ambient air temp or waterlogged when applied. 4 runner eats winter alive.

I don’t know that it’s rational. I kinda like the Tundra AT, but I can’t explain why. I think I probably need a lot of therapy, but I’d rather just try to fix stuff instead.

You mean you stalled it even though it comes pre-modded with accumulator delete and pre-tuned to full otto???!!!!!???

I stalled mine a few times after I first bought it, then again, years later, after driving a colleague's 1st Gen with the 5MT and the 3.4. The clutch pedal was so feathery light, and the truck required so little throttle to start, that I immediately stalled my own truck when I got back in it.

    I've never driven a 3rd gen 6MT.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
I'm glad I found this thread and am also glad Toyota continues to offer the manual transmission with their 3rd gen Tacoma. That option is one of the main reasons why I chose to get the Tacoma over its other competitors. I hope Toyota would continue to offer the manual for their next generation Tacoma, even though it seems unlikely that will happen.

Mine is the basic manual trim,
manual brakes, steering wheel is manual and gear selection is manual.

It does have automatic windows even a rear window!

Found this out today, you can drive with the cruise control set on any speed,.. if you shift gears up or down the truck stays the same speed.
The RPMs will go up or down depending on the gear you choose but same speed.

Little on the out of the box thinking by Toyota on that one.

Yeah, I’ve been talking to @Hayrider about that. I think we could possibly attempt to simulate the same on our 2G’s w a dummy connector completing the clutch sensor circuit. Just not sure if the engine would rev while shifting. Perhaps if done quickly at proper speed it would work well enough. Though for safety I don’t mind how it auto disconnects and clicking resume isn’t hard. I love what I hear about adaptive cruise for you lucky dogs with newer trucks.

What do you mean by Manual Brakes and Steering, don't think any vehicles after the 1970's have non-boosted? The last vehicle l owned with Manual Brakes and Steering was a 1973 VW.
