What laws are stopping me from going to Northern tool, welding some riser bars out of 2x2 PTS, welding some cross members to them and throwing my RTT on this trailer (link below) and just driving somewhere to go camp?

    https://www.northerntool.com/shop/t...Ng4xu-PERs2jBTh7fgBoCeOUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Like is there a law in place holding me back here in Texas? You have to register your truck and now trailers too? Im sorry, I thought I was in America not North Korea.

Afaik, that is not a new law:notsure:. Pretty much anything with wheels on the road needs to be registered with state motor vehicle department.

Buy and register a trailer here in Michigan. We have permanent plates.

I don't even know where the registrations are for my 4 trailers.

No plates or registration for small utility trailers in SC. I don't have a title or even a bill of sale for mine. No stupid inspections on vehicles either.

See if you can register your Tacoma as a tow truck. You wont need to tag or register anything you tow. This would probably cost more than tagging and registering your trailer.

Late to the party and yes, there is a law on the books in Texas. This took me less than 5 seconds to find on Google. Relevant TX statutes:
    • Sec 502.040 REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
    • Sec 502.254 FEE: TRAILER, TRAVEL TRAILER, OR SEMITRAILER
You can scroll through the document or CNTRL+F to search for relevant terms on the web page. My guy, it has wheels and it is on the road so it needs to be registered according to TX statute. Safety is one concern and you are also using the roads so your registration $ goes towards maintaining those roads in your county and state. This is why, when you move, states and counties give you 30 days to register. Your vehicle is using local resources and the registration $ should be going to the locality where your vehicle is used the most.

Solid melodrama you have going. I read this part in an Alicia Silverstone, "Clueless" voice. How millennial of you to compare a state that starves its population and forces them to worship their leader to having to register a trailer with the DMV. Well done.

While my comparison was over the top I stand by sentiment that this country we live in is un-American in the traditional sense.

Also late to the party, but I went down this road buying a trailer with only a bill of sale.

Yes, it needs to be registered.
No, mine didn't need to be inspected.

Registration was easy and only took a few minutes. I went in person to our tax office and told the lady "I just bought a trailer, can you help me figure out the paperwork?" - I wasn't an asshole, and she was super helpful.

If you go in there protesting and calling them dictators, YMMV.

Until you are injured by an unsafe trailer incident you don’t want any regulations. Afterwards you clamor for regulations when the driver gets away without consequence.

Thats what insurance is for. The law doesn't stop thing from happening, it simply punishes people afterwards.

They're usually really nice when I go. They're not the dictators FYI, they're more of just the person saying "I just follow orders and uphold the law" after giving you your number when you get put on the train.

Also late to the party. Late-er, I guess. Have owned a Texas trailer or two.
    • Every trailer needs a license plate, sticker, and working lights. (except farm trailers, they are their own special world.)
    • Trailers over 3500 pounds gross need brakes plus the above.
    • Trailers over 7500 pounds gross need an annual inspection plus above. It used to be 4000 pounds, but fortunately the requirement got relaxed a bit.

from my over 20 years working for the US Govt. regulations usually procreate more regulations.... or as an old boss of mine once called it.... "it's a self licking ice-cream cone"

when I had a small HF Trailer I just registered it in Maine which was a 10 ? year plate and cheaper than 1 year in the Vampire state aka NY.

They will suck you dry but not in the good way that makes you content and sleepy....
