Post more pics of your truck as it is if you could please.

Folks are so dramatic about power and MPG. I just drove 300 miles round trip (mixed, but mostly freeway) and clocked 21.5 MPG. No apparent/subjective power loss, though I do have a MT.

    Sliders, 6112's, full skids.
Manuals have 4.30 gears and the ATs have 3.91. That definitely makes a difference. Add 33s, bumpers with winch and skids and you will notice a dramatic difference.

I should add that I do have a manual transmission but, I can even notice a negative effect just from the 1 inch larger tires especially when starting on hills.

I have 130lbs of sliders and skid plates
430lbs on the rear with canopy roof rack and tent
My leaf springs are also heavier than stock and of course the tires are too.

Going to add another 65lbs of skids very soon as well

I will post photos I have now, I don't have many photos of most recent mods (surprisingly) but will take some more photos today.

here is the progression and what it looked like hope it helps your decision

    Stock suspension with canopy:

Front 2inch lift with 1.5inch add a leaf with rtt and canopy on rear:
Note that these two are before settling on front

Why are the 285s so much harder to run than the 255s? Is there a huge weight difference?

I think I would lean towards the 285s for better sand performance etc. But probably will wait a while.

Damn, truck looks good. The current tires doesn't look too small either. I think i can live with the same lift height and that tire size till I need to get new tires

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
30mm wider matters in the clearance of all those things you don't want to mess with.

Each brand tire has charts available with various tire measurements, wheel requirements and weights. That's the place to look, because you can't really make a blanket statement on the weight due to brand variance.

I have a set of the new 17”TRD rims with Faken Wildpeak AT on them. Size 285/70R17. I’m looking at the lift kits from Rough Country and I’m not sure if the 3” lift will be enough for no rubbing issues, or do I need to get the 3.5” lift? Any advice you guys can give would be appreciated.

I finally got bigger tires 2020 Long Travel Tacoma 1997 MAGNUM
I got a 2020 sr5 with 285/75r16. 33s clear everything fully flexed out. I do not have a lift. I also wheel this thing to it's max lol, no regrets. You'll sometimes feel it rubbing on the UCA when steering is maxed however.

Earlier in the discussion it was brought up that lift isn't really the determining factor behind the tire size you can run might checkout this video lots of good info

Did anyone mention wheel offset and alignment specs play a factor? You can fit 285/75r16 with no rubbing if you have the right alignment and wheel offset. It will move the wheel forward to get away from the cab mount and offset will move it away from the UCA
