Start with the simple and work your way up.

    Have the battery tested.

2012 tells me it all. Limp mode. Secondary air pump issue. Do the mod.

Secondary air fault won't turn the battery (alt) warning light on. Test the alternator/battery and cable connections

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Repeat of the above. Test the alternator.

If it's bad you'll just ruin the new battery.

RPM below 1? You mean 1,000? Yes, it should be in the 750-800 range

Unplug the alternator field connector with the engine running and see if the whine goes away

    This^

Whine noise could be the alternator too. Try a mechanics stethoscope or wooden dowel or long screwdriver.
