Being as this is a manual transmission thread, I wanted to brag on my ‘03 a little. It turned over 333,333 miles all on the original clutch. It shows no sign of slippage or anything but I also drive conservatively. The wife is going to start re-learning on it now that I have reached that milestone, hopefully that will not be the death of it.
I personally do not expect that longevity from an automatic transmission without some form of mechanical intervention but, other’s experiences may suggest otherwise. I’m hoping the new truck’s clutch will last as long.

 

I hope I get that type of reliability, unfortunately I am not conservative with anything I drive... oh well. I have no issue changing out a clutch when the time comes.

 

I've owned 6 Toyota 4x4 manual trucks since 1981. I put between 100,000 and 200,000mi on every one of them. I've never had to replace a clutch.

 

My 2017 Pro4X MT (Rip) was a fucking rocket. Outperformed my Taco in every direction except suspension travel. And fuel economy. Boy howdy are those D40s thirsty....

Tbh the T case should be 3:1, not 2.52:1. Not a huge difference, but enough to put us into Jeep territory (2.92, Rubicon has 4:1)

That's how my 95 Pathfinder was. 300+k on the original clutch.

 

Yeah, Nissan did a great job with the VQ40 and FS6R31A. My only complaints were the clutch delay valve and the dual mass flywheel. I should have deleted the delay valve. I bet the flywheel would have been fine after that, only slightly vague.

I geared mine to 4.56 briefly and holy cow, was it fun lol. It was a bit of a high revver on the hwy but it was so freakin powerful and enjoyable to drive. I think I’m a year or two I’m going to seek out an old 05-08ish Xterra and gear it to 4.56 and enjoy the hell out of it as an extra side vehicle alongside my Jeep and taco.

 

I really want a 1st gen Xterra with that 5 speed.

Or better yet, another 95 WD-21

 

opinions requested, please.

symptoms:
- chirping once per revolution. see video linked below.
- chirp stops when depressing clutch pedal.
- the clutch pedal feel has degraded badly in the last few drives, and the pedal is now rough, vibrates and also stops the chirping at very top of pedal travel. before, all engagement at the pedal was about 2" down.
- the clutch grabs and holds normally. don't see any leaks. i can still drive it.

I'm taking to the shop Monday but am wondering if it's unsafe to drive until then?

 

pretty sure thats the throw out bearing. same thing my is300 did when it was going out

 

yeah. this will be i think my 4th. or 5th, I'm actually not sure. it's funny though, I'm going in for a pretty huge 100k service with other bells & whistles, so i guess it's time to just expedite. I've just been concerned about the pace of degradation of the pedal feel. I'm not typically looking at damage from these bearings... what do you think?

 

with the pedal feel changing, id probably do it sooner rather than later but I would still drive it. mine made noise but the feel never changed.

 

As @Shellshock mentioned... throw out bearing. My 4Runner has a noisy one for the entire time I owned it. Really noticed it in drive-throughs.

The feel in pedal is something to definitely get checked out. That could mean the bearing is close to failure. That could have some bad effects throw out guide on the tranny and on the clutch diaphragm fingers.

 

this is my concern but i don't know the specifics. my drive today was just a few miles and the feel changed throughout. tomorrow I'm driving one hour to Dallas and back again.

 

The noise going away when you push the clutch sounds like a throw out bearing to me too... my old Subarus would do something like that when they were about to go.

4th or 5th throw out bearing!?
